About the role

The Decarbonisation and Resource Management challenge area fits within the context of the increased need to decarbonise energy and industry, the need to use resources more optimally, driven global competition for resources and a need to expand the delivery of affordable, sustainable energy across the world.

Geological disposal of radioactive waste is one of the key research areas within this challenge.

Deep geological disposal is a key solution to the long-term, safe management of radioactive waste, but it requires understanding of the geology from the surface to depth, to safely site a repository.

This public-good science forms a core part of the BGS and underpins our role as the UK's national geological survey.

This work is cross-cutting across the wider BGS programme and involves geologists and other specialists from across the BGS science challenges and is a forward-looking investment in UK geology that provides relevant, coherent and enriched geoscience knowledge and quality assured data.

You will be encouraged to assist with and develop project proposals & engage with external customers and clients. You will also lead on written outputs including client-facing reports, peer-reviewed publications, and presentations.

You will develop in-depth knowledge about key parts of the UKs geological history and subsurface succession and demonstrate this knowledge through relevant research and publications.

For the higher band (UKRI Band E), we expect you to have extensive experience working on the UK's sedimentary basins and have demonstrable in-depth knowledge of their stratigraphy and structural history.

You will be able to relate your scientific knowledge to applied considerations and be able to convey this expertise to our key partners.

You will share your geological knowledge with colleagues and collaborators, including specialists from other fields, clients, and members of the public.

Although the role is primarily desk-based, you will be required to carry out some field-based activities, as well as become involved in BGS's international programme, including overseas office-based and field-based activities.

The role will work on multiple BGS projects over a year and at any one time.

About you

This should include knowledge and experience of the latest approaches to the understanding of subsurface characterisation, sedimentology and/or structural controls on basin development, investigation techniques, and applied considerations.

You will possess knowledge, experience, and the ability to work confidently with, and develop robust structural geological interpretations from, diverse geoscientific data including seismic reflection data, borehole data, geophysics and field-observations.

You can demonstrate the ability to assist with and develop project proposals with external partners and clients and you are highly motivated to take part in our programme of work, in the UK and overseas, and are prepared to participate in fieldwork.

This role at either level requires excellent communication skills, both verbal and written and involves team working so you will be able to work effectively with colleagues and have great time management skills.

Please also refer to the additional specific essential and desirable skills criteria for this post.

It is a world leading geological survey whose core mission is to advise government of science related to the subsurface and to undertake applied research to solve earth and environmental issues, both in the UK and globally.

It is funded directly by UKRI, as well as through research grants and private sector contracts.

BGS has an annual budget of approximately £60 million and employs 650 people.

It has two main sites:
a head office in Keyworth near Nottingham, and the Lyell Centre, which is a collaboration with
