Environmental Geoscientist
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Marine Geoscientist to join our team at the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh.
As a Marine Geoscientist, you will play a key role in projects related to the offshore renewables industry, providing input into BGS's geological mapping of the seabed and its subsurface. You will be responsible for analyzing and interpreting various 2D and 3D seismic datasets, as well as multibeam bathymetric, backscatter, and borehole data.
Your expertise will be used to create scientifically robust, processed-based 'ground models' that can inform the planning and installation of offshore infrastructure, such as windfarms, tidal, and cables.
To be successful in this role, you should have a degree in a subject related to earth sciences or physical geography, and/or relevant commercial experience. You should also have evidence of your ability to use specialist seismic analysis software applications, such as Kingdom Suite and Petrel.
Excellent GIS skills and experience in creating geological/geomorphological maps using remote sensed data are highly desirable. You should also have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and be able to work flexibly and effectively within a team.
This role requires offshore field work on survey vessels, potentially including day working on small survey vessels and longer 2 to 4-week assignments on larger ships. The role qualifies for offshore allowances and overtime payments when working extended hours and at weekends.
A great benefits package is offered, including a generous pension scheme, 30 days annual leave plus bank holidays, and access to flexi-time.
Applicants are required to include a cover letter outlining their suitability for this role. We would stress the importance of this paperwork in our selection process.
A well thought through application addressing the advertised essential and desirable criteria for the post will be considered far more favourably than a generic covering letter and CV.
