London, United Kingdom Direct Line Group Full time

At Direct Line Group, insurance is just the start. Combining decades of industry experience with talented people in every field from data, technology, customer care and auto repair, to HR, finance, and procurement, we're a customer-obsessed market powerhouse. And we all work together to be brilliant for customers, every single day.

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Head of External Relations. Reporting into our Director of Corporate Affairs, this role defines and delivers our overarching strategy to influence key policy-makers, political stakeholders, consumer groups and NGOs, impacting the business and wider insurance industry.

As Head of External Relations, you will represent DLG externally with senior stakeholders in a variety of external associations and forums, proactively expanding the company's external network, identifying opportunities for further engagement. This is a hands-on role where you'll need to think strategically and execute collaboratively at pace, across a company going through lots of change and transformation.

What you'll be doing:

You will actively manage DLG's External Relations strategy and engagement with external stakeholders including Government, Parliament, Trade Associations, Consumer Groups and NGOs. Drawing on your understanding of the political system to offer political and public policy, you'll provide advice across a broad range of topics relevant to our business.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with policy makers, Ministers, MPs, advisors, civil servants, think tanks and other key opinion leaders - effectively advocating and educating on DLG's positions regarding sustainability, corporate achievements, future goals and commitments.
  • Build industry-wide relationships to support the interests of the sector, collaborating with industry players to build alliances and integrated strategies that promote an understanding of the essentiality and value of the insurance industry.
  • Assist with research and draft written submissions to Government consultations and Select Committee inquiries.
  • Research, forecast and evaluate the effects of public policy on DLG using public sources, political intelligence and personal contacts.
  • Write newsletters, briefings, and campaign material.
  • Respond to public policy threats and opportunities.
  • Manage DLG's engagement with charitable organisations.

What we're looking for

  • Significant public affairs experience, with a strong track record of working closely with government, trade associations, think tanks, and/or and national level decision-makers.
  • A strong interest in, and enthusiasm for, politics, policy issues and current affairs (e.g. understanding of Westminster and Whitehall).
  • Excellent research and communication (written and oral) skills.
  • A growth mindset, able to work well reactively, remaining positive and focused under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, judgement, and discretion - with the ability to inspire trust and confidence in part on advice given.
  • Excellent listening skills, as well as the ability to take an impartial view.
