About the team

The Corporate Tax team is a welcoming, friendly and open team. We have responsibility for the Corporation Tax regime, tax issues specific to the Financial Services sector, and other UK taxes levied on incorporated businesses.

We work on high-profile, stretching, and politically relevant measures that help support different economic and fiscal objectives. Those objectives include encouraging business investment and innovation, supporting UK competitiveness, and raising revenue through protecting the UK tax base from avoidance.

Our work is often fast paced, wide-ranging and requiring of engagement with external partners and other areas of Whitehall, and it involves development of policy in areas of the tax system that are complicated and that interact with accounting, company law or industry regulation. Our team has always been made up of people with a diverse set of backgrounds and experience, and there is substantial support and on the job training to help you develop the skills needed for the role.

About the role

Key accountabilities

  1. Lead, empower and manage a team of around 15 individuals, with direct line management responsibility for 3 Range E2s (Grade 6s).
  2. Working closely with HMRC, lead the team to originate, design, implement and evaluate changes to the corporate tax regime to support different economic and fiscal objectives, including promoting growth, supporting the UK’s international competitiveness, ensuring sustainable tax receipts, and countering avoidance and aggressive tax planning by multinational groups.
  3. Ensure your team enacts effective and appropriate taxation of different parts of the financial sector, taking account of their outstanding characteristics, their specific regulatory regimes, and their role in the wider UK economy.
  4. Support your team to advance the UK’s interests on international corporate tax matters (e.g. the allocation of taxing rights, effective protection against base-erosion, improving tax certainty and administrative cooperation) in the various different fora, most notably the OECD Committee of Fiscal Affairs and the OECD BEPS Inclusive Framework.
  5. Build trusted and effective relationships with external partners and international counterparts and use those relationships to help support the aforementioned responsibilities.
  6. As a member of the BIT GMT, play an active role in promoting a positive culture in BIT to improve wellbeing and engagement, shaping and delivering the BIT business plan and ensuring that BIT is an encouraging, stretching and fun place to work.

  7. Will have experience of developing policy in a technically fast paced area, preferably within tax.
You'll have a track record in leading hard-working teams to deliver against challenging objectives within tight timescales or uncertain environments. You'll be able to explain technical issues to a range of audiences with a view to informing and influencing their decisions. You will also be skilled at creating a strong network of contacts, with the ability to use that network to help inform, deliver, and land detailed policy reforms.
