PhD Studentship: Intelligent automation of low-carbon offsite construction delivery

With the rising demand for sustainable buildings to reduce carbon emissions in the construction industry, there is systemic shift from tradition construction to offsite construction. This is due to the increase in quality and productivity offered by offsite construction to improve construction delivery.

Recent studies have identified offsite construction as key potential in reducing carbon emissions associated with construction processes due to its streamlined approach to project delivery. However, determining the efficiency of offsite construction in reducing emissions is complex, with limited knowledge of the emission levels that offsite construction would achieve in the current state-of-practice.

Therefore, this research project would explore the use of AI in determining the current levels of emissions and develop optimal ways for low-carbon offsite construction. In this project, offsite construction processes would be characterised and classified based on emissions, and machine learning techniques would be used to analyse effective ways of achieving low-carbon offsite construction in projects.

The study contributes significantly to low-carbon construction research by exploring the efficiency of new solutions and technologies in offsite construction for low-carbon outcomes. This would enhance effective decision-making for practitioners in construction projects with carbon emissions targets and further facilitate the development of a digital twin approach for carbon emissions evaluation in offsite construction.

The UK's built environment is responsible for around 25% of the UK's greenhouse emissions. Still, as a sector, it offers credible opportunities to mitigate the impact of climate change by applying net zero strategies, circular economy principles and other measures. However, the term net zero is very broad in its scope implying the integration of a wide range...
