PhD Studentship: Strategic Use of Digital Technologies in Delivering Modern Methods of Construction

Calls from both research and practice emphasise the inability of traditional construction methods to meet the government’s housing goals. Meeting the set goals exacerbates the need to change the ways places are delivered. By changing the longstanding traditional construction methodologies onto a more controlled environment; circular, societal, and sustainable benefits can be widely realised. However, the industry has recently witnessed the downfall of leading organisations associated with comparable construction offerings referred to as the modern methods of construction (MMC). As a result, the UK Built Environment Committee launched a national inquiry to investigate the rationale behind these collapses, revealing a complex and evolving set of challenges.

Through the integration of information modelling, this project will investigate the strategy associated with digitally transforming processes in organisations who are delivering pre-manufactured value (PMV), aiding their competitive advantage by addressing their internal and external challenges. Hence, the research project aims to promote the strategic standing and survival of MMC organisations through digitalisation in the United Kingdom.

The objectives are:

  1. Explore the internal and external factors influencing the business continuity of organisations offering turnkey pre-manufactured houses.
  2. Examine the role of digitalisation in overcoming the internal factors undermining the effective design for manufacturing and assembly of turnkey pre-manufactured houses.
  3. Examine the role of digitalisation in overcoming the external factors undermining the effective design for manufacturing and assembly of turnkey pre-manufactured houses.
  4. Develop a holistic digital platform based on information modelling principles to assist organisations’ strategic standing in the construction sector.

The UK's built environment is responsible for around 25% of the UK's greenhouse emissions. Still, as a sector, it offers credible opportunities to mitigate the impact of climate change by applying net zero strategies, circular economy principles and other measures. However, the term net zero is very broad in its scope implying the integration of a wide range...
