Clinical Scientist (Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation Protection)

The Radiation Physics Section in Swansea Bay University Health Board is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Clinical Scientist to join our expanding team.

Radiation Physics provides scientific support and expert advice in X-ray diagnostic radiology physics, radiation protection, radioactive waste management, and radiation emergency planning to Swansea Bay University Health Board and a number of other establishments throughout South-West Wales covering a population of approximately 950,000.

We are one of the major radiation physics service providers in NHS Wales and form part of a large, modern and well-integrated Department of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering based at Singleton Hospital in Swansea. The Department has strong links with the adjacent Swansea University and offers accredited training for Clinical Scientists and Practitioners.

Main duties of the job

To be eligible, you must either be a Clinical Scientist registered with the HCPC, or be in the final year of STP/Route 2 training and expect to achieve registration within the next 6 months. If you are currently a trainee and are successful at interview you will be made a provisional offer on condition of successful completion of training. While it would be advantageous if a substantial part of your training was in Radiation Safety and Diagnostic Radiology, achieved through the STP or Route 2 training pathways, we would welcome applications from all those interested in a career in Radiation Safety & Diagnostic Radiology who may have originally specialised in other areas.

You will contribute to the delivery of the Section’s X-ray equipment quality assurance and optimisation programme with the aim of assisting Swansea Bay University Health Board and its external customers to meet their statutory requirement to keep radiation doses to staff, patients and the public as low as reasonably practicable. In addition, the successful applicant will provide close support to the Radiation Protection Advisers and Medical Physics Experts within the Section, and contribute to a range of high quality teaching and training programmes in relation to radiation safety and diagnostic radiology physics.
