Bangor, United Kingdom National Trust Full time

We’re looking for an interim Assistant Director Operations for North Wales – this is a fantastic opportunity for someone to take the lead on growing our visitor business in North Wales, while developing their operational and leadership skills in incredible locations, working with passionate and committed teams.

If you’re an inspiring and engaging leader, committed to making history and nature accessible to everyone, we’d love to hear from you. You’ll manage a team looking after historic houses, castles, gardens, and woodlands across the captivating landscape and coast of North Wales, as we prepare for our new strategy.

What it's like to work here

Reporting to the Director for Wales, you’ll take strategic ownership of our activities in North Wales. You’ll be part of a great, supportive National Trust Cymru Leadership Team, working together to bring our new national strategy to life at the places we care for. Every day you’ll be inspired by the people you work with and the things that we can achieve.

As this role covers North Wales, your contractual place of work will be the nearest National Trust consultancy office to your home. Our hybrid working policy means you can balance office and home working with site visits and meetings at other National Trust places. We’ll talk about this in more detail at interview, but you should expect to be at a National Trust site for 40–60% of your working week.

What you'll be doing

This is a strategic and operational leadership role within a complex and multidisciplinary organisation, working in a devolved context.

Essentially, it’s about leading a team of 5 General Managers across North Wales, helping them to deliver their business plans, lead their teams and look after the places in their care, enabling them to give a magical experience to everyone who visits. You’ll demonstrate leadership and drive as we grow and develop the visitor business in North Wales. You’ll seek out and cultivate external partnerships to increase our connections and extend our reach as we deliver our strategy.

Who we're looking for

We need someone who can deliver a fantastic operational performance, supporting and developing our team as we head into a new strategy period; to be a stable leader during a period of change. We need an ADO with experience of visitor growth and diversification, cultural and built heritage, and partner collaboration; someone who can lead for Nature, Culture and for North Wales

Please demonstrate in your CV and covering letter:

inclusive leadership skills, with the ability to coach and mentor a widely dispersed team

experience in leading complex and varied operational teams

ability to build and develop mutually beneficial relationships with external partners

experience in successfully leading a wide range of projects and programmes and managing risk

knowledge, or curiosity, about historic and natural environments and the challenges of managing visitors and conservation

confidence with financial planning and budgeting

ability to communicate our purpose, showing how National Trust Cymru can benefit society by delivering our strategy and how we can support the Well-being of Future Generations Act within Wales

ability to speak Welsh and an understanding of the cultural aspects of Wales and expectations of Welsh People would be beneficial in this role

The package

The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.
