We are looking for a Deputy Director, External Communications, to lead three teams across: Research Communications, Corporate Communications and Content.  This role defines strategy, leads teams who create and capture compelling content, and manages the University’s profile across external platforms.  The role delivers strategy in tandem with Internal Communications, Marketing and Stakeholder Relations, and works toward the creation of integrated reputation management.

You will have strong leadership skills, a strongly collaborative working style, with an evidence-based mindset and a thorough knowledge of communications.   

The Opportunity:

This postholder will be the institutional authority on latest techniques and strategies within the professional remit of external communications and have the required influence to embed and enact policy and strategies at sector-leading standard.  Allied to this, you will be recognised internally and externally as the lead in this area.

  • Shape and deliver integrated communications strategies in support of the strategic ambition, enhancing external understanding and reputation of the University of Edinburgh 
  • Lead a team of professionals in the three areas of: Research Communications, Corporate Communications and Content, delivering innovative and professionally-led communications activity to support the University’s strategic objectives, deputising for the Director as necessary 
  • Ensure the University of Edinburgh has the appropriate level of coverage in local, national and international media, levels informed and governed by the overall ranking and esteem of the institution at home and abroad 
  • Develop and provide leadership, working  proactively on campaigns and dealing reactively with a wide variety of reputational issues
