Job Summary

Funded by a major international sponsor, we are seeking an enthusiastic researcher to join our team in developing and characterising new types of adhesives, utilising bio-based ingredients to improve product sustainability.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will work closely with leading academics and research sponsors to develop and characterise bio-based adhesives and adhesive joints. You will use a wide range of techniques to investigate microstructure, adhesion, strength and toughness and will employ advanced techniques to determine the suitability of the materials for industrial use. Opportunities will exist to acquire news skills, attend conferences, publish your research and develop your research profile.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • You will conduct research into the development and characterisation of sustainable adhesives.
  • Together with subject experts, you will devise a number of formulations based upon partly bio-based ingredients, to be used as adhesive materials to bond metallic substrates.
  • You will identify suitable test techniques for the developed formulations, conducting appropriate experiments to measure their physical and mechanical properties, manufacturing adhesive joints between metallic adherends and the adhesives, and test these to determine the relevant joint properties such as single lap shear strength and fracture toughness.
  • You will perform various advanced characterisations including, for example, durability testing and impact testing of adhesive joints.

Skills, knowledge and experience

  • For Associate level, you should hold a PhD in Mechanical or Materials Engineering or a closely related discipline. For Assistant, a first/masters degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical or Materials Engineering is required.
  • You must have practical experience within a research environment and / or publication in relevant and refereed journals.
  • You must have practical experience in a broad range of techniques including materials characterisation, in particular polymers, polymer matrix composites and/or adhesives.
  • Knowledge of Material properties, polymerisation, toughening, characterisation is essential.

Further information: 

This is a fixed term position for up to 24 months in the first instance.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £41,694 to £44,888 per annum.
