Position Summary:

The Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) will be based at the Dover Fueling Solutions site in Broughty Ferry, Dundee. 

Hours of work - Part-time - 28 hours/week 

This role encompasses delivery of our Occupational Health Services along with Health and Safety and Human Resources and brings these disciplines together to provide a high quality service.

 

Who are we looking for?

To be considered for this position, you must be a registered general nurse (RGN) with a minimum of 2 years post-qualification experience in nursing and clear, active NMC PIN.

Ideally you will have previous experience of working within an occupational health setting (ideally within a manufacturing environment) and will posess relevant additional qualifications.

However, we will also consider applications from enthusiastic and motivated nurses who have not previously worked specifically within occupational health, but who can demonstrate some knowledge of occupational health along with a desire to develop a career in this area and who are willing to complete further study in Occupational Health (which would be funded by DFS Dundee).

 

Responsibilities:

The OHN will be responsible for the development of occupational health strategies for the prevention of ill health and the promotion of health and well-being at our Dundee site.  This will include conducting return to work assessments, drug and alcohol testing, health surveillance, providing OH advice / walk-in clinics and health promotion initiatives etc.

 

  • To provide a full OH/Treatment service including consultation, clinical assessment & treatment, advice, education, medical assessments, and D&A testing where appropriate and in accordance company protocols, policies and procedures.
  • To provide professional advice, support and guidance to HR, Supervisors, Management, and Health and Safety and generate clear accurately written reports to assist in staff management.
  • Maintain accurate medical records in line with professional bodies; the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) code of professional conduct, data protection legislation and statutory health and safety requirements. To ensure these are maintained in line with departmental protocols on record keeping.
  • To provide ergonomic and environmental assessments for individuals reporting ill health problems with work contributory factors or implications.
  • To assess staff presenting to Occupational Health and provide sound clinical advice and treatment.
  • To assess staff fitness to work for the appropriate job role in line with the policies and guidelines.
  • To write letters to GP/Specialists in line with the Access to Medical Reports Act and Data Protection Act.
  • To provide clinical assessment of staff presenting with minor illness and injury.
  • To provide health surveillance in accordance with current legislation and in line with policies and guidelines.
  • To provide clinical support to the first aid provision on site.
  • To assist in the provision of health promotion and wellbeing on site.
  • To work with Health and Safety to ensure statutory obligations are met as required under health and safety and employment law.
  • To assist Health and Safety with risk assessments i.e.: manual handling, pregnancy, long term sickness/return to work.
  • Advise on fitness to return to work or modifications to continue at work.

Essential Skills:

  • Registered general nurse (NMC) with at least 2 years post-qualification experience
  • Be able to provide clear and concise reports within a defined turnover time
  • Audiometry testing
  • Spirometry testing
  • Drugs and alcohol screening
  • Hand, Arm Vibration (HAV)
  • Skin assessments
  • Fitness for work medicals
  • Pre-employment questionnaires
  • Health Assessments (night worker)
  • Proficient in MS Office
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize and manage own workload.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Flexible, hands-on approach to working as part of a team or individually.
  • Excellent organisational communication and administration skills
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently with departments.

 

Desirable Skills:

  • Occupational Health Nursing experience
  • Post-graduate Diploma in Occupational Health (preferred)
  • A high degree of discretion, influence, and medical confidentiality
  • Knowledge of Health, Safety and Occupational Health Law
  • Excellent people management, presentation skills, communication and team working skills
  • Previous experience working in manufacturing, engineering, food manufacturing in an OHN capacity
