Micon is a highly skilled multidisciplinary engineering company with service capabilities covering the following areas: geology, mining, metallurgy, mineral economics and environmental and social studies in the mining, minerals processing and financial sectors.

We are currently seeking a Mining Engineer to provide unparalleled consulting services to our clients. You will apply your expert Mining Engineering experience to a variety of metallurgical projects, working alongside our international team of technical experts.

The Mining Engineer will work on mine design, reserve statements and engineering aspects of Micon projects. The successful applicant will work with the Economic Mining Engineer to offer solutions to clients regarding open pit and underground mine design, operations optimisation, due diligence, costing, ventilation design, scheduling, mining cashflows and code compliant report writing.

Some travel time will be expected, typical site visits are between two and five days, but could be for up to two weeks. These site visits are typically for data verification or collection, due diligences, audits or associated with mine design for a new project. Site visits are usually to remote sites at exploration stage projects or fully operational sites and typically hosted by the client. Micon has extensive experience of world travel, current projects from the UK office have recently been in eastern Europe, Central Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

Reporting to the Managing Director of the UK Office you will be performing a range of duties, including but not limited to:

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Maintaining a high level of service to existing and new clients.
  • Design of Open Pit Mines from pit shells to detailed design, including scheduling.
  • Design of underground mines from MSO stope shapes to development design and scheduling.
  • OPEX and CAPEX costing of mine designs.
  • Optimisation of current operating mines.
  • Ventilation design.
  • Geotechnical interpretation to mine design.
  • Visiting site to work with local onsite team to gather information or optimise process of mine design and operations.
  • Monitor and audit mine facilities, systems and equipment.
  • Contributing to consultancy reports for Micon's clients on a variety of aspects relating principally to reserve estimation, mine planning and valuation.
  • Contributing to the independent evaluation of both undeveloped and developed mineral properties.
  • Leading and managing project objectives and schedules as established by the Employer.
    Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

    • Mining Engineering B.Sc. or similar for undergraduate level.
    • 2-6 years operational experience in open pit or underground operations.
    • Ideally member of professional body such as IM3, AusIMM, etc.
    • Experience as a member or leader of multi-disciplinary teams.
    • Strong English language writing, editing, and proof-reading skills, including business writing.
    • Strong organisational / time management skills with an ability to handle multiple tasks and effectively balance priorities.
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
    • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills, and ability to work independently.
    • Proactive, responsible, diligent, critical thinking and integrity with willingness to learn.
    • Ability to travel to remote sites, either individually or as part of a team, as required, possessing a valid passport.
    • Residing in the UK, Norwich Office preferably, possibility of Cornwall Office position, without restriction or sponsorship.
    • >1 year of 3D mine design software desirable, ideally Surpac, Datamine, Deswik, Vulcan etc. also ventilation design in VentSIM.
    • Assets:

      • Mining Engineering M.Sc. or similar desirable, but not required.
      • Short courses or training in economics, geotechnical design, software or similar desirable.
      • 1-2 years of consultancy experience desirable, but not essential.
      • Working knowledge of French, Spanish or other second language is beneficial.
      • Proficient with Microsoft Office tools, specifically SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook, Teams, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
