We’re recruiting an Active Travel Officer to play a key role in delivering this vision. About The Role Your focus will be on making active travel safer, more accessible, and more enjoyable for everyone. You’ll support the design and delivery of walking, wheeling, and cycling schemes, with a strong emphasis on infrastructure—so technical knowledge of highway design and a passion for active travel are essential. Working collaboratively with local authorities, national partners, and communities, you’ll help create inclusive and innovative infrastructure and initiatives. You’ll contribute to developing our active travel network and investment pipeline, support scheme design and implementation, and ensure projects meet the highest standards. Key Responsibilities Include: Assist the Design Review Panel in evaluating proposals and ensuring alignment with national and regional standards. Support development and delivery of the active travel network, investment pipeline, mapping, and schemes. Ensure underrepresented communities’ voices are prioritised in design and delivery. Collaborate across teams to integrate infrastructure, behaviour change, and safety measures. Provide input into planning applications to promote active travel-friendly developments. Support the Safer Roads strategy and integrate safety measures into schemes. Contribute to trials of innovative infrastructure designs with local authority partners. Help develop propositions to secure funding and policy support from Government. Build strong relationships with internal teams, Active Travel England, and other stakeholders. Assist in developing specifications for commissioned services and act as client for procured services. Stay informed on national and local policy and best practice in active travel. About You We’re looking for a proactive and detail-oriented individual with a strong technical/ highways background who is passionate about creating healthier, more connected communities through active travel. You’ll have the ability to combine your technical knowledge with extensive communication and collaboration skills, and thrive in a fast-paced, multi-stakeholder environment. You’ll be confident in interpreting data, reviewing highways designs, and contributing to strategic planning, all while keeping the needs of local communities at the heart of your work. About You: Experience in highways design / has an engineering background. Experience in designing and delivering active travel infrastructure including on the highway. Experience in partnership working with a range of stakeholders. Experience in CAD. Knowledge of transport strategy development and project delivery. Familiarity with national design standards for highways and active travel infrastructure. Strong analytical and research skills, including data interpretation and mapping. Excellent communication skills, including report writing and presenting to stakeholders. Ability to understand and communicate complex information clearly. Desirable: Knowledge of consultation requirements for active travel infrastructure. Working knowledge of programme management techniques and GIS. Experience supporting strategy and bid development. Understanding of political environments and ability to respond to urgent requests.
