We currently have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Environment Manager to lead our team in Stanford le Hope, Essex. Our successful candidate will manage the environment team and environmental programme at DP World London Gateway, the UK’s newest deep sea container port and attached logistics park development, which is rapidly being developed.

We need you to devise, develop and implement environmental strategies and monitoring , alongside key stakeholders and ensure environmental regulatory compliance. Our ideal candidate will have demonstratable experience in an environmental role, as well as line management experience and a natural ability to lead with proactivity. You will ideally come from a heavy plant, construction or operational industry and have overseen/interacted with development consenting.

Location: Stanford le Hope, Essex

Hours: Monday – Friday 37.5 hours per week

Contract: Permanent

Closing Date: 17 September 2024

How you will contribute

  • Manage and mentor the environment team.
  • Manage the environmental and permitting programme of works for the project, ensuring relevant environmental licenses, permits and permissions are obtained and compliance with environmental laws. Manage the planning, contracting, design and execution of the environmental tasks that need to be carried out to support the construction and operation of the project.
  • Lead in the development and implementation of DP World London Gateway’s environmental monitoring programs and strategies. This will include developing the monitoring scopes, competitively tendering works and technically reviewing any reports and outputs. This will cover a wide range of environmental elements such as marine, ecological, air and water quality monitoring programs.
  • Lead on the environmental approach regarding external stakeholder communication and representing DP World London Gateway on environmental matters with regulators, customers and tenants, trade associations (UKMPG), NGOs and the local community such as fishermen and members of the public.
  • Procure resources (internal and external) to meet the requirements of the environmental programme.
  • Manage the environmental works undertaken by contractors and consultants and provide expert advisory support to other teams carrying out works with environmental components or considerations.
  • Develop the budgets needed for environmental works and then ensure that works are carried out in accordance with agreed project budgets.
  • Provide advisory support to project teams for contracts to mitigate the potential for claims associated with environmental aspects.
  • Manage the submission of documentation required to satisfy environmental planning conditions.

Support the commercial team with commercial environmental projects and services.

  • Ensure that local environmental objectives are set and met to align with corporate environmental objectives.
  • Manage liaison with regulators, statutory and non-statutory consultees, landowners, marine users, contractors and consultants in relation to the environmental programme.
  • Manage the remediation and materials management strategy.
  • Manage the Environmental Assurance Team of technical consultants and the functions of the Environmental Advisory Group (meeting of environmental regulators).

What you will bring

Desired Qualifications

  • Degree in environmental science, environmental engineering or equivalent qualification.
  • Full membership of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment or equivalent.

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in relevant roles.
  • Team management experience.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of environmental laws related to the development activities at DP World London Gateway, including planning and environmental impact assessments.
  • Demonstrate a proven track record of project management on large projects e.g. highways, rail, power, dredging, marine work, construction, warehousing and industry.
  • Strong experience in leading environmental programmes and achieving environmental consents.
  • Commercial awareness and ability to negotiate contracts.
  • Excellent organisational and prioritisation skills.
  • Capable of handling complex project management issues, including regulatory liaison.
  • Ability to interpret environmental technical information and make data driven decisions.
