Hours: Part Time fixed term contract, 8-12 hours per week, 3 months fixed term.
Salary: £18.75 p/h – £28.75 p/h depending on experience

Deaf Unity is a deaf-led charity aimed at empowering deaf people and removing barriers to success. We are seeking a dedicated and empathetic Careers Advisor to support deaf individuals in their job search and career development. The ideal candidate will provide tailored advice and assistance with CV writing, job applications, interview preparation, and overall career guidance, ensuring that our clients can achieve their professional goals.

The right candidate is self-motivated, and confident to set up, plan and deliver their own work, with support as required from Deaf Unity.

Key Responsibilities:

Career Counselling:

  • Conduct assessments to understand clients’ skills, interests, and values.
  • Provide one-on-one career counselling sessions to deaf individuals, helping them identify their career goals and develop actionable plans to achieve them.

CV and Cover Letter Assistance:

  • Help clients create and refine their CVs and cover letters, ensuring they effectively highlight their skills and experiences.
  • Ensure that CVs are tailored to specific job roles and meet industry standards.

Job Search Support:

  • Assist clients in identifying suitable job opportunities and applying for positions.
  • Teach job search strategies, including how to use job search engines, networking, and leveraging social media.

Interview Preparation:

  • Provide guidance and practice sessions for job interviews, including mock interviews.
  • Offer advice on how to communicate effectively during interviews, considering the clients’ specific communication needs.

Workshops and Training:

  • Organise and conduct a workshop on various employment-related topics such as job search strategies, interview skills, and workplace communication.

Documentation and evaluation:

  • Keep clear documentation and notes from meetings with clients, following appropriate confidentiality
  • Evaluate impact of work and workshops by creating and maintaining surveys that document impact.

Job requirements

  • Previous careers advisor/counselling/employment support experience
  • Experience working with deaf individuals and a strong understanding of Deaf culture.
  • Proficiency in BSL
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organisational and time management abilities.
  • Empathy, patience, and a commitment to supporting the career development of deaf individuals.
  • Knowledge of accessibility including reasonable adjustments at work.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Teams and able to keep clear, organised notes and documentation.
  • Experience in conducting workshops and/or training sessions (not essential).
