Stage 2 is the new Sussex Cancer Centre (SCC) that will replace the Barry Building and surrounding structures and Stage 3 is the service and logistics yard that will replace the existing Cancer Centre.


A major capital appeal is being set up to support improvements to the new centre beyond what is available through standard NHS funding.


Phase 1: Planning Phase

~ The Planning Phase is crucial to ensure we have the best foundation in place for a successful appeal. During the Private/Quiet Phase, the incumbent will secure income and pledges from charitable trusts, charity partners, high-net worth donors and prospects plus corporate partners.


During the Public Phase the appeal will be widened to include community fundraising, direct response campaigns and dedicated events reaching the whole of the catchment area audience, staff, past and current patients and their families, as well as continuing work securing support from charity partners, trusts, HNW individuals and corporates.


The wider capital development programme will also require charity input over time. The post holder will be expected to advise the charity on support for this programme, for instance, the acute floor reconfiguration at the Royal Sussex County Hospital and the new stroke unit at St Richard's Hospital.
Lead the Capital Appeal for Sussex Cancer Centre's 170m redevelopment project to build a new Cancer Centre. be adroit at building high-level internal and external relationships and be able to identify and develop donors and prospects to secure significant gifts.
use great communication skills and a creative mind set to develop strong working relationships with supporters and prospects at all levels to deliver income and gifts in seven figures.
coordinate with colleagues from across the spectrum of departments involved in supported capital programmes to ensure the full integration of the fundraising and charitable functions within the relevant project and governance structures.

Using the Trust and the Charitys networks including existing donors, trustees, volunteers, staff and supporters, patients and families, identify, research, and manage the cultivation of prospects, converting them into donors, including at six- and seven-figure gift levels.
Establish relationships with key prospects and co-ordinate contact with them, involving the senior leadership teams of both the Trust and the Charity to plan the most appropriate approaches.
Present capital project appeals to senior management of prospective corporate donors and to large groups in formal and informal settings.
Cultivate relationships with high-net-worth individuals, key networkers and potential ambassadors for the appeal.

Develop, implement and monitor the planning and private phases of the Capital Appeal Strategy to enable the charity to meet the appeal target.
Assume a leadership role within the Capital Appeal team from an early stage in the project, ensuring fundraising outcomes are considered at every major decision point.
Initiate and manage a programme of enlistment and fundraising events designed to cultivate high net worth individuals, corporate leaders, trust and foundation grant-makers and celebrity endorsees/patrons.
Work with the senior 3Ts Redevelopment team to integrate the fundraising strategy into the wider strategic processes of the redevelopment.
Work with the clinical teams and procurement to develop targeted lists of equipment and spaces involved in capital projects that can be used for fund raising.
Work with the charity leadership team to identify and recruit appropriate external consultants to projects as required.
Be responsible for the planning, private and public phase Capital Appeal expenditure budget.
Ensure all financial procedures are carried out in accordance with internal and external audit requirements and in line with relevant charity policies.

Line manage any member of the charity team who is dedicated to capital appeals in compliance with Trusts policies.
Build and manage professional relationships with external consultants working on the project, including taking responsibility for changing or terminating their participation.
Identify where you or the charity team may benefit from training to address skill gaps in the capital appeal process and find appropriate training to meet these needs.

Support the delivery of projects that raise funds to improve or directly improve the experience of patients, visitors and staff.


Attend mandatory training updates as required.
Undertake training as necessary in line with the development of the post and as agreed with the line manager as part of the personal development process.
Achieve and demonstrate agreed standards of personal and professional development within agreed timescales.
Identify own learning needs and jointly plan training requirements with your line manager
Participate in the Trusts appraisal process to discuss how your role will help deliver the best possible care to our patients and help to deliver any changes in service.

Highly competent in use of Office suite software and cloud based file management systems.
Postgraduate qualification in (or including a significant component of) fund raising / charity management / relevant project management.
Knowledge and experience of digital communications including web resources and social media platforms.
