London, United Kingdom Wellcome Trust Full time

The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.

We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.

These challenges need the bold science we support, but they won’t be solved by science alone.

We are looking for a Safeguarding Lead to join our team.

Where in Wellcome will I be working?

You will in the leading Safeguarding strategy and work as part of the Ethics, Governance & Compliance Team, reporting to Associate General Counsel, Ethics Governance & Compliance.

The Safeguarding Lead will identify and manage all safeguarding risks across the organization such that we protect those with whom we come into contact (and especially those in at-risk groups) from harm.

What will I be doing?

As a Safeguarding Lead, you will :

Lead and catalyse a safeguarding culture across Wellcome by managing a cross-organisational risk register, working with all teams across Wellcome (including Wellcome Collection and Research Funding) to identify safeguarding risks and implement controls and mitigations and provide safeguarding advice and guidance to all teams as needed.

Ensure Wellcome maintains an appropriate and fit for purpose safeguarding policy environment and procedures, including within Wellcome Collection. Wellcome’s safeguarding responsibilities flow through our grant chain, and this role will also support implementation of our policies and procedures for safeguarding in grants (including bullying and harassment), including engaging with UKCDR, the Funder Safeguarding Collaborative and other stakeholders on safeguarding in international development research matters.

Develop and implement engaging safeguarding training, communications and resources for all staff and those who specifically engage with at risk groups. Lead Wellcome’s focus on safeguarding in relation to at-risk groups (and working with Lived Experience colleagues).

Handle the escalation and appropriate management of specific safeguarding incidents (including in Wellcome Collection), including reporting to external agencies as required, and feeding into quarterly incident reporting to senior management and governance bodies, as well as briefing the Board’s Safeguarding Champion on a quarterly basis.

Collaborate closely with a broad range of other internal and external contacts across the business, including (but not limited to) people, mental health, legal, internal audit, communications, institutional funding, and risk.

Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments.

Is this job for me?

An experienced and strategic safeguarding professional looking to work for a philanthropic funder. Someone who is capable of working autonomously yet also as pat of a team; who is able to build coalitions across the organisation; and help manage the relatively few (but important) safeguarding issues.

We are looking for someone who:

High level of safeguarding knowledge

Experience in relation to safeguarding young people and/or those with mental health problems highly desirable as well as in safeguarding at-risk groups in relation to the operation of a publicly accessible venue (museum/library)

Experience establishing an effective safeguarding framework, ideally with experience within a grant making charity.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to engage effectively with employees at all levels, with highly-developed interpersonal and diplomatic skills, political acumen, intellectual rigour, sound judgement and the ability to advise, influence and challenge appropriately and ability to plan well and think ahead and pre-empt actions

Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills, the ability to prioritise, and an openness to take on new challenges, to look for new approaches and to continuously develop personally and professionally

Proactive communicator who naturally ensures clear information flows between management and governance bodies and vice-versa.
