Main Purpose of the Job

  • To support a positive Catholic ethos, which recognises the dignity of the individual and is reflected in the day to day life of the school
  • To support the Assistant Head i/c Safeguarding and SEND in: Leading on all Safeguarding matters across the school
  • Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of all young people at La Retraite RC Girls' School
  • Ensuring that the school has effective procedures for identifying student need and for supporting that need
  • Reporting to other bodies, internally and externally, on a regular basis about individual students and the whole of Safeguarding at La Retraite
  • Leading the work of other staff in the Safeguarding team

Key Role Responsibilities

Leadership role:

  1. To work with the Assistant Headteacher to ensure that all school safeguarding policies and procedures are reviewed annually
  2. To assist the Assistant Head in identifying staff training needs and providing the appropriate cpd
  3. To oversee the Early Help Referrals made by the Pastoral Support Managers
  4. To oversee the safeguarding cases for one of the following areas as agreed with the other Deputy Safeguarding Lead and the overall Safeguarding Lead: KS3; or KS4 & KS5.

Student Pastoral support:

  1. To work with the Designated Safeguarding Lead and to be trained and qualified to the same standard
  2. To liaise with the Attendance Officer and the EWO regarding students who have attendance and punctuality concerns
  3. To support the Pastoral team in providing an effective support for `vulnerable' students on
  4. To ensure all staff are aware of their safeguarding responsibilities and know how to manage safeguarding incidents
  5. To lead on the completion of referrals to Social Services, the MAT (Multi-Agency Team) and the EWO, working with other staff, such as the Attendance Officer, where appropriate.
  6. To liaise with and keep relevant staff informed of any issues that may affect students in their care, being mindful of a student's/family's right to confidentiality.
  7. To liaise with Social Services and any other external agencies involved with students
  8. To manage Team Around the Child meetings held in school
  9. To co-ordinate any appropriate intervention for children and families that has been identified during meetings
  10. To work with the Pastoral Team and relevant external teams to ensure that effective support is provided for an individual.
  11. To be the designated worker for Looked After Students
  12. To regularly liaise with the families of children for whom intervention has been put in place
  13. To manage Safeguarding records
  14. To monitor the use of CPOMS
  15. To monitor the online safety of pupils using the school network using Classroom cloud
  16. To help complete Personal Education Plans for looked after children To refer allegations or cases of suspected abuse to the relevant investigating agencies
  17. To act as a source of support and expertise regarding Safeguarding issues within the school
  18. To deputise in the absence of the Assistant Headteacher i/c Safeguarding and SEND

General Responsibilities:

  1. To participate in the school's staff development (CPD) programme
  2. To continue personal development in relevant areas especially subject knowledge & teaching methods
  3. To engage actively with the school's appraisal programme
  4. To work as a member of a team, positively contributing to effective working relations within the school
  5. To communicate, where necessary with parents and external agencies, following school policies
  6. To attend Open Evenings, Parents' Evenings and other whole-school events as appropriate
  7. To attend Monday morning staff briefings
  8. To report to the school's Fire, Health & Safety Officer Fire, Health & Safety issues undertaking risk assessments where necessary
  9. To undertake any other duties as the Headteacher or Senior Leadership may reasonably require
  10. To adhere to the expectations laid out in the Staff Code of Conduct

Person Specification

The person appointed to this post must be able to demonstrate:

  • An ability and willingness to support the Catholic ethos of the School
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written
  • A high level of ICT literacy
  • An excellent record of punctuality and attendance
  • Experience of working in an educational setting with students
  • Relevant qualifications in education, social work, therapy, nursing or similar profession
  • Knowledge and understanding of child protection and health and safety practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge and awareness of issues and factors related to underachievement and barriers to learning and participation.
  • Ability to communicate with young people, both individually and in a group setting.
  • Able to build constructive relationships with parents and carers
  • Able to develop and maintain close links and work effectively with staff from other agencies
  • Able to gather information and produce reports
  • Good organisational skills and a flexible approach to the management of work.
