The Role


We are looking someone to lead a small squad of test automation engineers. The team is developing reusable test automation components, rather than tests, and so good development practices are essential as they produce a 'product' and so cannot operate a 'write it, use it and fix it' approach to their work.


We are primarily looking at this as a permanent role but may consider other arrangements for the right person.


The Right Person


The right person will know what sound software-development-team working disciplines are, having gained this knowledge through industrial experience. They will have led a team of developers, though not necessarily a team producing test automation code. They will have the ability to sense check approaches, monitor the progress and quality of work, provide technical and working practice guidance and to intervene, directing how things are to be done, when this becomes necessary.


They will be able to take high level requirements and concept of how requirements are to be met and to turn these into more detailed working requirements for the team to work to. This will require the ability to take relatively abstract concepts and to map them onto concrete structures and features to be implemented in software.


This person will have their own industrial coding experience and a grasp of more sophisticated features of programming languages such as generics, closures and async execution. They will understand how to structure software appropriately and how to identify and extract reusable components to ensure consistency and reduce maintenance cost. An understanding of the challenges of making software reliable when it has to interact with an unpredictable and ever changing peer is key. They will understand and instinctively employ good code version and branching practices and ideally will have continuous build experience.


Experience of both Java and C# development would be beneficial. Experience of test automation using Selenium and/or Playwright would also be beneficial but is not essential.


Industrial Experience

For industrial experience we are looking for experience from roles that you have worked in for 12months or more. Generally work that lasted for a shorter period will not be taken into account though, exceptionally, we may consider roles that lasted for 9-12months.


We are interested in understanding the extent of your industrial experience in the following areas:

  • Leading a small (4-6 people) team of developers. Being responsible for the tasking of these developers, for ensuring they work efficiently and that they produce high quality products. Ensuring each individual contributes appropriately to the work of the team. Being fully accountable for the performance of the team.
  • Creating and operating a disciplined software development practice for a team.
  • Ownership of, or a 'senior' role in, the management of source code and of building products from source code.
  • Worked as a developer of industrial/commercial software, or similar, writing code that ultimately ran as part of the product or system. In this case we can also take into account contributions to open source software development.
  • Development of non-trivial test automation solutions or bespoke test tools.
  • Development, maintenance and effective use of Selenium or Playwright based test automation.
  • Development of software, the main product not unit test software, in Java using Maven.
  • The operation and maintenance of large scale system and solution test automation suites.


Technical Expertise

Technical expertise may have been gained in different ways, it might have come from a role you have held but it might arise in other ways such as taking professional development courses, from an academic experience or from self learning.
