Our Heritage Planning Unit (HPU), part of the Planning and Urban Design Department, is dedicated to providing specialist cultural heritage consultancy. With teams in London, Cairo, and Amman, the HPU supports large-scale master plans and various departments, including Architecture, Environment, and engineering specialisms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Client Interaction: Engage with clients through workshops, presentations, and advocacy.
  • Research and Evaluation: Conduct desk-based research, literature reviews, and draft cultural heritage baseline appraisals; perform site evaluations, including building archaeology.
  • Design Inputs: Provide heritage-led design inputs, including conservation, urban planning, rehabilitation, and adaptive reuse strategies.
  • Report Preparation: Draft specialist report inputs such as DBAs, Statements of Significance, townscape studies, VIAs, Environmental Statements/HIAs, Conservation Management Plans, and design guidelines.
  • Consultant Review: Review technical inputs of external consultants.
  • Proposal Development: Prepare proposals for new projects.
  • Professional Support: Provide broader support for urban planning and urban design projects, including drafting InDesign documents and presentations.


Qualifications and Experience

  • Relevant Master’s degree with at least 4+ years professional experience
  • Proficiency in GIS (especially ArcMapPRO), Adobe software. Any other design softwares are a bonus (training provided).
  • Demonstrable experience in landscape archaeology, environmental impact assessment, buildings archaeology, academia and research, written schemes of investigation, built heritage valorisation, international cultural heritage practice, interpretation, public archaeology, and information management.
  • Excellent understanding of cultural heritage conservation approaches and legal frameworks, with sensitivity to different regional approaches and cultures.
  • Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage time effectively. Willingness to work closely with colleagues across different countries and departments.
  • Openness and ability to travel overseas at short notice for short site visits.
