Job summary

Do you want to work as a Band 6 Senior Dietitian at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham? Do you have an interest in adult Neurosurgery acute inpatients? Do you have a passion for providing specialist nutrition support and enteral feeds? Do you have a passion to support patients from their acute phase of their illness through to acute rehabilitation phase? Do you like working as a core member of the MDT? If so, this could be the post for you.

This full-time post ( hours per week) is fixed term for 12 months. This split role involves working with acutely unwell patients with brain tumours, head injuries and spinal injuries that have had surgery. The post holder will be working on a busy acute ward, helping in the nutritional treatment of patients with a variety of complex illness and surgeries. Applicants must have good communication skills, be able to work independently, have significant experience in enteral tube feeding, oral nutritional support and be familiar with IDDSI guidelines.

Experience working with patients to promote the role, good nutrition plays at all parts of the patients journey from recovery to rehabilitation is essential. Your clinical dietetics knowledge and expertise means that you will be working as the Dietetic expert in the SHARP team (Specialist Hyperacute rehabilitation pathway).

Main duties of the job

We are looking for experienced staff, with a passion for working with neurosurgical and spinal patients. Dietitians should have practical knowledge and experience of enteral feeding, have clinical skills with supporting complex patients to make decisions around enteral tube feeding (referring for long term enteral feeding tubes). The Dietitian will need to be able to lead Best Interest Meetings, complete Mental Capacity Assessment and support clinicians at ethnic's meetings.

The successful candidate will be based at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital where they will be part of the larger dietetic team of over 50 dietitians and dietetic assistant covering various specialities. You will work closely with therapy colleagues such as Speech and Language therapist, Physiotherapists, Occupational therapists and specialist nurses to improve patient's nutrition and hydration. You will be expected to independently manage a patient case load alongside supporting in-patients across the Trust by advising fellow Dietitians on appropriate transfer and discharge destinations for patients ongoing rehabilitation. They will work as key members of the MDT, undertaking projects, writing clinical guidelines, undertaking MDT training.

*Evidence of relevant GCSE, NVQ, GNVQ, AS and A levels *Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics or equivalent *Registration with HCPC

*MSc or equivalent experience advanced level of clinical practice / relevant postgraduate, professionally accredited courses

*Relevant post registration experience relevant to clinical area. *In depth for nutritional assessment / nutritional screening tools. *Knowledge of all types of nutritional support including practical experience with enteral feeding. *Knowledge of rehabilitation pathways *Up to date with clinical developments, with evidence of contributions to clinical meetings / journal clubs. *Working knowledge of computer programmes word processing, spreadsheets, power point, dietary analysis, data collection and patient information programmes. *Evidence of clinical audit and/or research. *Evidence of multi-disciplinary team work. *Knowledge of standards of record keeping and medico-legal issues. *Experience of training Dietetic students.
