Senior Lawyer – Consumer Banking Legal Team

Edinburgh, United Kingdom Lloyds Banking Group Full time

Description

About this opportunity:

The Everyday Banking legal team is part of the Consumer Division of the Legal & Secretariat Community. We challenge ourselves, and will welcome someone who’s curious, versatile and enthusiastic, and wants to work at the heart of the Everyday Banking business.

Your focus will be on the wide range of issues that affect personal bank and savings accounts. This focus will include some product-related payment and delivery issues, where the Everyday Banking lawyers often work alongside and in collaboration with specialist colleagues in other legal teams. You’ll also support transformation projects, assisting in the delivery of changes to products and services. You’ll offer insightful legal expertise and commercial advice to business partners in Everyday Banking and their support areas, and facilitate the delivery of excellent outcomes for customers and for LBG. As part of this you’ll develop a good understanding of the personal bank and savings accounts offered by the different brands within LBG, including the systems they run on, plus some appreciation of common processes and customer journeys. You’ll have technical knowledge of retail banking law, general consumer law, FCA principles and rules (including the Handbook, BCOBS and CONC), Payment Services Regulations, Payment Accounts Regulations, consumer credit (overdrafts), HMRC’s cash ISA rules and other requirements applying to the products and services we support, plus some appreciation of underlying industry arrangements such as the LINK schemes, Open Banking and banking services through Post Offices and banking hubs. This will include an understanding of the higher standards of customer treatment expected under Consumer Duty. (If you are not familiar with the detail of all of these, but have some relevant expertise, transferable skills and are keen to learn, we are also happy to consider your application.) You’ll have sound legal, commercial and risk judgment. You’ll build effective working partnerships and consensus across a variety of functions, proactively challenging, advising and influencing business managers on legal issues. You’ll use your technical expertise and experience to provide specialist training or mentoring to others. You’ll also be required to deputise for other lawyers, and may have from time to time some line management responsibilities. You’ll thrive on challenge and be able to balance multiple competing demands. You’ll collaborate with other legal teams and join Consumer Legal initiatives and Legal & Secretariat community projects. We’ll look for you to focus on growing your own capabilities and investing in your personal development, including through opportunities within the team given our wide remit.

What you’ll be doing:

As a senior lawyer in the team, you’ll advise on all aspects of the Everyday Banking bank accounts (including overdrafts) and savings products as well as ancillary services and propositions. This includes supporting on:

Account conditions (both drafting and for conditions reviews); New products and product changes; Ancillary services and propositions such as insurances for packaged bank accounts, safe custody and prize draws (with a willingness to learn about new law for novel proposals, and occasional need to support business areas on related contracts); Digital, branch and telephony journeys; Legal requirements, and legal developments (including applying those developments to LBG products and processes); FCA and relevant PRA requirements (and developments) including BCOBS, PERG, FSCS, complaints, consumer duty, branch/ATM closures and access to cash; Overdraft collections and recoveries (including customers in financial difficulty); Legal risks (including ensuring these are appropriately raised, reported, escalated and shared); Training needs of the businesses we support; Customer complaints; and Rectifications and remediations.

You’ll need to deliver technical legal input to influence projects, with a significant impact across LBG. This means working collaboratively with lawyers across the legal community to provide joined up legal support.

In addition, you will:

Assist in dealings with the FCA, PRA and other regulatory and trade bodies. This may involve help crafting external thinking on new and changing regulation and legislation; Work in partnership with other Group, Divisional and Business divisions; Help to deliver the engagement model between Legal and our customers; and Initiate, lead and participate in Legal and Secretariat community projects and development initiatives.
