What you'll do
As a Leadership Development Manager at Sainsbury's, you will play a crucial role in implementing key development interventions across the organisation. You will be responsible for understanding the business requirements and creating or sourcing appropriate content to address these needs. This includes owning and managing projects related to behavioural and leadership development, retail and line management development programmes, high potential talent programmes, and core skill development aligned with our valued behaviours. Collaborating closely with HR teams and other stakeholders, your strategic approach will involve developing and communicating strategies for specific areas, creating meticulous project plans, identifying interdependencies, and simplifying processes where possible. Drawing on your extensive knowledge of leadership and management principles, you will continuously research and enhance our development approach and offerings, incorporating behaviour change principles and utilising the Kirkpatrick model for evaluation. Additionally, you will forge external connections and manage suppliers to ensure we have industry-leading leadership development solutions. Your ability to work strategically, influence stakeholders, manage projects, and drive lasting behavioural change will be crucial to the success of this role.

With your extensive knowledge of leadership and management principles, trends, and behaviour change theories, you have a proven track record in identifying, designing, and delivering high-profile leadership development solutions. Your ability to think long-term and take a proactive approach allows you to deliver sustainable learning outcomes and continuously improve development offerings. As a skilled communicator and influencer, you engage with stakeholders up to senior management level, gaining commitment to new ways of working and ensuring lasting behavioural change across the organisation. With your strong project management skills, you are able to effectively plan, prioritise, and deliver development initiatives within budget and on time. Overall, your expertise, strategic mindset, and commitment to continuous improvement make you an invaluable asset in shaping and enhancing our leadership development programmes.

What you need to know and show

Essential

A wide-ranging level of knowledge of leadership and management principles and trends; both current and future. Extensive experience in identifying, developing and delivering high-profile leadership development solutions. Strong understanding of generic learning principles such as 70:20:10. Ability to think long-term and act proactively to deliver long-term, sustainable learning outcomes and identify opportunities for continuous improvement. Comfortable working in an environment of rapid change and ambiguity, prioritising your workload, and standing by your decisions. Strong project management skills to deliver on time and to budget. Ability to plan and prioritise over 12 months. Excellent relationship and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence up to Senior Manager level and gain commitment to new ways of working. Role model continuous professional development and demonstrate ability to learn from, and generously share feedback.

Desirable

Deep knowledge of what it takes to shift mindset and behaviour, applying relevant theory and research from the worlds of science and psychology. Strong understanding of the macro environment that defines our decisions – this includes the People landscape, the retail environment and the macro economic climate. Ability to work at a strategic level, combined with a pragmatic approach ideally based in your own personal experience of management. Effectively hold People partnership teams accountable for embedding solutions and creating lasting behavioural change across the organisation. Show a deep understanding of the Retail landscape and commitment to customers. A mindset focused on ‘making things better’; critically evaluating on-going processes and solutions in order to stop, adapt or implement ideas. Excellent verbal, presentation and written communication skills.
