This post includes providing a service to children and young people with a wide range of speech, language and communication needs.

The pre school service is provided primarily in clinical settings and

school aged children are seen primarily in their educational settings

The post holder will be required to:

assess and diagnose children with a wide range of speech, language and communication needs provide therapy in the form of direct individual therapy, groups, parent workshops, and therapy programmes to be implemented by nursery/pre school setting staff liaise with parents and other professionals contribute to the delivery of training for parents, school staff and other colleagues collect data contribute to team audits and to the development of policies/procedures The post holder will be a member of RCSLT and HCPC registered

Main duties of the job

- To provide an effective and efficient speech and language therapyservice to children with communication and/or swallowing difficulties.- Under the guidance of a more senior therapist, the post holder will beresponsible for a paediatric caseload in a variety of settings- Duties will include assessment, diagnosis, therapy (both group and/orindividual, as appropriate), planning therapy programmes and dischargeof clients

Job responsibilities

1. Responsible for initial patient assessment including:Collection of detailed case history informationInformal assessment and observationFormal standardised assessment proceduresLeading to diagnosis and further ongoing detailed assessment, leading to:An individual programme of careReferral to other services as appropriateCommunication of assessment and therapeutic findings within themultidisciplinary team , as appropriateResponsibility of decisions leading to review or discharge of clients2. Undertake clinical work with individuals and groups of clients. Developcoordinated multidisciplinary programmes of care/care packages. May workindependently or with other SLT colleagues, or as part of a multidisciplinaryteam. Provide advice, strategies and programmes, as appropriate to the widerworkforce, including parents3. Manages a caseload with support as determined by department policy,independently seeking support from other specialist colleagues4. Establish and maintain liaison with parents/carers and other professionals,both within own department and with other services/departments for thecomprehensive managementof clients. Includes attendance and participation at case conferences5. In all situations, will communicate complex and sensitive information toclients/parents where there will often be significant barriers to understanding.Communication will include both verbal and non-verbal methods6. Direct and supervise assistants and volunteers in individual and grouptreatment programmes, according to department policy7. Demonstrate progression of clear therapeutic aims as appropriate to clinicalsetting, with the use of established team outcome measures8. To collect statistical data and be involved in the use of audit and outcomes tomeasure and improve quality of Contribute to development of procedures, policies and standards for servicedelivery and service delivery plans10.Maintain and provide accurate and timely documentation patient recordsand reports, sharing with others as appropriate, observing data record contact electronically within 3 days of best practice SLT standards in accordance with national, regional andprofessional the required level of continuing professional development as stated byRCSLT and required by the Trust.Actively participate in receiving:Individual personal development programme/appraisalPeer reviewReflective practiceClinical supervisionIndependently identifies own development needs and discusses with LineManager should formal training be required14.Responsible for ensuring that own practice is safe and appropriate inaccordance with RCSLT and HCPC15.Provide prospective SLT undergraduates and other professionals theopportunity to observe the work of a SLT. To contribute to the supervision ofstudents16.Deliver training to other agency personnel, parents/carers, individually and/orin groups on specific SLT related knowledge and and provide input at SLT service meetings, multidisciplinary meetingswithin Health Economy and external multiagency meetings18.Observes personal duty of care in relation to equipment and resources incourse of work and highlights the need for ordering further equipment good time keeping and planning, to execute the role effectively20.Recognising when support from other specialist colleagues is required, forexample when help required in interpreting and analysing assessment resultsin more complex refer matters that may impact on service delivery to Line Manager or otherauthority before taking undertake any other duties of a similar nature consistent with theresponsibilities of this post in order to provide a quality Speech and LanguageTherapy service
