Job summary

Ward Manager, Band 7 Permanent - Full Time - hours per week

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a substantive Ward Manager post to support and provide leadership in Bromley Inpatient services.

We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated leader to support and manage the delivery of high quality inpatient mental health care on a mixed sex, acute mental health ward.

You will be responsible for promoting and developing clinical leadership by acting as a positive role model who practices evidence-based care. You will be joining a supportive senior nursing team who encourage personal development through supervision, PDR, CPD training programmes and further education.

You must also be able to provide supervision, mentorship and leadership for staff at Band 2 to 6 and student nurses as appropriate and also provide support to the Unit's Duty Senior Nurse (DSN).

Main duties of the job

Overview of the Post

Responsible for the operational management of clinical area. Lead and effectively manage the ward nursing team. Ensure high standards of evidence-based, patient centred care is maintained. To establish and maintain systems for clinical governance. To effectively and efficiently manage ward budget and resources. To promote good communication within the team and with external agencies.

Key Task and Responsibilities

To provide management and leadership of all staff and resources within the units incorporating implementation of change and deliverance of standards of care. Budget management authorised signatory. To maintain clinical role. It is expected the role will divide 25% clinical and 75% management, but this should be flexible to respond to unit needs.

Job responsibilities

Main Duties and Responsibilities of the Post

Staff Management and Supervision

Exercise strong clinical leadership to support and inspire colleagues, improve standards and quality and to develop professional practice. To be visible and accessible for all team members and other Heads of Department. Acting as Team Leader within the nursing framework and work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure all staff development needs is maintained. Ensuring adequate staffing levels and balanced cover to meet the patients' needs within the financial restraints placed on the unit budget. Co-ordinating the nursing teams in providing care for the patients with the ward. To ensure that all staff have yearly job development reviews. To monitor and manage sickness absence within the team. To ensure annual leave is taken and cover is maintained. Lead in selection and recruitment of staff within each ward. Ensuring safe practices are in place and to act on areas of concern Health and Safety. To ensure that staff rota covers the wards needs in line with need to manage resources.

Financial Management

To manage the ward's current budgets. Ensuring that all members of the ward team take into account during the course of their working day the financial constraints imposed upon the ward. Ensure the financial constraints are adhered to in relation to ad-hoc usage of agency/temporary staff. To meet monthly with the service manager to discuss budgets and identify potential cost pressures/savings.

Quality and Standards

Responsible for infection control including audits, best practice and use of protocols with the ward environment. Responsible for ward cleanliness in association with Initial Services. Handling complaints from patients, members of the public and staff in accordance with the Trust's Policies and Procedures. Implement policies and propose changes to practice, procedure for own area. Contribute to policy and practice changes arising from eg audits and complaints. Investigating complaints and preparing a structured response following the investigation of complaints or clinical incidents. To evaluate the service against national and international benchmarks, which are characteristic of the best evidence-based practice and through networking and by comparison and sharing, promote further improvements in services provided by the team. To set, monitor, audit and lead on appropriate practice protocols and standards within the Trust's clinical governance framework. To undertake clinical audits and surveys in order to maintain best practice in compliance with the Trust's clinical audit programme and Essence of Care programme. To play a key role in clinical governance by providing expert advice, working to secure quality improvements, liaising with and influencing other disciplines, the wider organisation and across organisational boundaries. Participate in clinical audit and review results that affect own area and patient care. Provide leadership in evaluating service against national benchmarks, including essence of care, National Service Framework for Older People and the NHS plan. Deputise for Service Manager at clinical meetings.

Training Research and Development

Ensuring the maintenance of the correct educational environment for student nurses and other learners and collate yearly learning needs analysis. Participating in student assessment and liaise with educational staff where appropriate. Acting as an effective role model/mentor/perceptor. Organise and participate in the orientation/induction of new staff to the ward. To lead in ward and trust teaching programmes. Acting as a resource and advisor to junior colleagues in the delivery of research based programmes of care ensuring that appropriate assessment, planning and evaluation takes place. Initiating research within the ward environment.

Professional Responsibilities

Maintaining high standards of communication and collaboration with the multi-professional network. Ensuring all nursing records and documentation is completed accurately and legibly to meet legal requirements. Maintaining and develop own professional practice, keeping abreast of new developments and concepts, both clinically and professionally. Maintain and develop own knowledge on the administration of drugs and ensure a structured training programme is rolled out to all nurses working within the clinical area. Maintaining own record of professional development in the form of a personal professional profile. Advising the most appropriate person of any change in circumstances which may affect patient care. Acting at all times in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct. To provide role in Hospital Major Incident Plan. To manage the beds on a day-to-date basis.

Communication and Working Relationships

Liaise with other care providers pre-admission and discharge ensuring the best use of ward beds and ensuring all stakeholders are aware of the ward role and dimensions. To hold and chair monthly ward meetings. To act as a co-ordinator and lead for patient, relative and carer enquiries. Aspect crucial to success of post, regular contact with all levels of Trust nursing staff, consultants in elderly care, older persons service, senior management team, senior managers, multi-disciplinary team members including social care and health, voluntary and independent organisation and academic institutions. Will require well developed negotiating skills. Communicate with clarity and confidence in a variety of situations, which may be demanding and difficult and may include barriers to understanding. Receive sensitive and complex information concerning patients' medical condition and health needs. Requires highly skilled persuasive, reassurance skills. Establish local, regional and national networking influences, facilitate, persuade and promote on-going team development in achieving all local and emergent strategies.

Vulnerable Adults, Children and Young People

All members of staff have a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of vulnerable adults, children and young people in all relevant areas of their work. This will include timely attendance at relevant training events and compliance with agency safeguarding procedures.

Clinical Obligations

If statutory/professional registration is a requirement of this role it must be maintained at all times. Responsibility to maintain continuous professional development in order to meet requirements of professional registration. To work within the boundaries of your relevant Professional Code of Conduct. Adherence to national guidelines and best practice evidence on infection control. Compliance with the Trust's clinical policies and those adopted by the Trust. Participation in the Trust's clinical governance structure.

Major Incidents

On limited occasions, the Trust may be asked to respond to a major incident, called by the emergency services. All staff will be expected to respond to a major incident if required and this may include arriving for work when asked or remaining at work until relieved.
