Trauma and Orthopaedics is a speciality that is growing within Harrogate with two new theatres about to start being built which will enable increase activity. We are a high performing unit in the national hip fracture database with two orthopaedic geriatrician embedded within our service.

Main duties of the job

The Matron will be a highly visible, accessible and authoritative presence in clinical areas to which patients, their families and others can turn for leadership, assistance, advice and support.

The Matron’s role will focus on:

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Planned and Surgical Care Directorate is responsible for delivering high quality and effective Medical and Nursing Care to patients within the hospital base, outpatients and community settings.

This includes patients within the following specialties which this role is responsible for:

  • Trauma and Orthopaedics Wards
  • Orthopaedic Outpatients
  • Fracture clinic / Plaster room
  • Trauma Coordinators
  • Elective Admissions and Discharge Unit

The PSC directorate is responsible for:

  • Identifying their strategic direction within the boundaries of the Trust strategic direction
  • The implementation of the strategic direction
  • The management of all resources within their remit both human and material
  • The risk management arrangements
  • The monitoring of quality of care arrangements
  • Delivering on action plans to improve performance, patients safety or financial balance
  • The performance against key performance indicators and activity plans
  • Delivery of the financial plan

To work as part of the PSC Management Team, the post holder is expected to work independently and flexibly to manage his or her own workload and that of the department.

Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria
  • Registered nurse or AHP
  • Evidence of post registration development at degree level
  • ENB 998 or equivalent teaching qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Master’s Degree
Experience Essential criteria
  • Experience and knowledge of clinical nursing / Allied Health practice in an acute setting
  • Management Experiance
  • Experience in influencing internal/external activities
  • Experience across the scope of the Matron’s ten key roles with potential to do all
Desirable criteria
  • Qualification in Management
  • Orthopaedic experience
Knowledge Essential criteria
  • Experience at Band 7 or equivalent
  • Current knowledge of clinical nursing / allied health practice in an acute setting
  • Experience of working in partnership with multi-disciplinary team members
  • Budget management
