Esland Bedford School is an independent SEMH special school for up to 50 children aged 8-18. The school provides education to day pupils, and via our unique Turning the Curve provision, to young people who have been disengaged from education for significant periods of time. We aim to maintain a nurturing and accepting environment for young people who have not had their needs met in other settings. Likewise, we also aim to provide a work/life balance to staff not available in larger schools.
To provide an inclusive nurturing environment that is accessible to pupils, staff, parents and carersTo liaise closely with colleagues in school to ensure best practice teaching strategies that meet the needs of all pupils in the classTo work in collaboration with the Deputy Headteacher to ensure pupil progression throughout Year 7 and enable successful transition through later years at Esland Bedford SchoolTo work with the Deputy Headteacher to ensure that all pupils have their needs met as set out in their Education Health Care Plan (EHCP)To provide continuity of provision and care, guidance and support for the most vulnerable learners across the curriculum. To maintain up to date pupil records, including recording assessment data, maintaining accurate safeguarding records and developing effective liaison with parents and carers.To support the development of schemes of work and methods of teaching/learning within the Nurture classroomTo be aware of and act upon national changes in the subject curriculum, ensuring that the curriculum offer within Nurture remains appropriate and in line with the curriculum through later yearsTo demonstrate unconditional positive regard to pupils, utilising strategies such as PACE and Zones of Regulation in order to support pupils in managing their own behaviour over timeTo maintain the highest levels of expectation of pupils, supporting them to overcome barriers to learningTo attend parents’ meetings where appropriateTo assist with induction and transition processes for Year 6 students. This may involve visits to current schoolsTo ensure that practice in the Nurture class contributes to the whole school ethos and encompasses our school valuesTo carry out any reasonable tasks related to the post that may be requestedThis job description sets out the tasks and responsibilities of the post at the time it was prepared. These may vary from time to time without changing the general character of the tasks or the level of responsibility entailed. Such variations are a common occurrence and cannot themselves justify a re-grading of the post.
Qualification and ExperienceQualified Teacher Status Degree qualification or equivalentIn exceptional circumstances applications may be considered for unqualified candidates who (a) can demonstrate a sustained track record of achieving strong outcomes for the pupils they have worked with, and (b) can demonstrate a willingness to undertake further training to attain QTS.Demonstrable outcomes for pupils as a teacherExperience as a KS2/KS3/KS4/KS5 teacherSkills, Knowledge and AbilitiesExpert understanding of inclusive pedagogyExperience of assessment without levels including tracking pupil progressKnowledge and understanding of statutory assessment arrangements at KS2 to KS5Knowledge and understanding of effective strategies to manage the behaviour of pupilsExcellent knowledge of inclusion including SEMH, EAL, bilingual learners, minority ethnic achievement and equality (race, disability, and gender)Excellent understanding of safeguarding, especially the safety and welfare of vulnerable and disadvantaged pupilsThe ability and willingness to teach a range of subjectsAn understanding of a range of SEND needs, including SEMH and ASDContribution to the educational and social development of individual pupils The ability to form effective relationships with young people, their families/carers and external agenciesTo ensure that young people’s views and wishes are sought and acted upon where appropriateTo maintain an appropriate environment, and provide appropriate resources, to meet the needs of all pupilsTo liaise with other teachers and teaching assistants in the team to ensure effective deployment of resourcesPersonal qualities
