This is an exciting opportunity for a Junior Clinical Fellow at SHO-level to undertake a post in Respiratory Medicine including General Medicine on-calls for 4 months Maternity Cover. It is ideal for a doctor who is considering a career in medicine or gaining further experience in respiratory and general internal medicine. This post will enable you to further develop clinical knowledge and skills across the respiratory and general internal medicine curriculum.

Main duties of the job

The post holder shall ensure that patients admitted to the ward undergo a medical assessment and ensure that a robust and appropriate management plan is in place, with the support of their team. Attend 2 consultant led ward rounds per week and will undertake daily ward rounds (either supported by a SpR or independently led). Be responsible for the daily maintenance of in-patient notes, preparing discharge letters (TTAs) for immediate dispatch to the patient’s General Practitioner and communicate with primary care and community services as needed.

General Medicine On-call

The Medical Take is staffed by 1 SpR, 2 SHO grade and an F1 grade doctor. There is an average of 25-30 patients admitted over a 24-hour period. During the day, there is a continuous consultant post take ward round providing the opportunity for immediate feedback and learning. Overnight, Consultant advice is available by telephone, and patients are reviewed on the morning post take ward round.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder:

Is responsible to the Consultants and Registrar for the execution of their professional duties.

They shall ensure that patients admitted to the ward undergo a medical assessment and ensure that a robust and appropriate management plan is in place, with the support of their team.

They will attend 2 consultant led ward rounds per week and will undertake daily ward rounds (either supported by a SpR or independently led)

They will, together with the team, undertake ward work to ensure that investigations are requested and treatment plans are completed. They will ensure that good communication is maintained with staff in all specialties in order to provide joined-up care for the patients. They will work as a valued member of the multi-disciplinary team and contribute to meetings and team decisions on patient care.

They are responsible for the daily maintenance of in-patient notes, preparing discharge letters (TTAs) for immediate dispatch to the patient’s General Practitioner and communicate with primary care and community services as needed.

They shall be expected to speak with patients and their next of kin if required and provide an update on management plans.

In carrying out their duties the Doctor will always be responsible for keeping their Senior Staff informed of serious cases on the ward, deaths, and any other matter which it is deemed necessary that their attention should be drawn to. Any cases in which there is doubt must be referred to a senior member of staff.
