Applications are invited to apply for the above post for the Department of Paediatric Rheumatology at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.

This is a substantive replacement post following partial retirement of the existing post holder, Dr Kathy Bailey. The post-holder will join a well-established multidisciplinary team as a third consultant, providing a comprehensive paediatric rheumatology and chronic pain service for the Thames Valley and surrounding region. The appointee will have the opportunity to work closely with consultants and allied professionals from the Children's Hospital Oxford, as well as a number of other DGH's throughout the region. There are close links with the adult rheumatology service. The appointee will also be part of the regional Chronic Pain service providing a comprehensive out-patient and intensive day case service to young people and families from across the region and beyond.

We are looking for innovative and enthusiastic Consultants with appropriate clinical and leadership abilities. The post holder will be fully supported by a busy and friendly department and will be encouraged to take part in research and academic development. Close links to the University of Oxford provide an excellent opportunity to develop research interests in a variety of areas.

Main duties of the job

APPOINTMENT

Applications are invited from candidates with appropriate training and experience for the post of Consultant in Paediatric Rheumatology at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, primarily working at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre for outpatient-based care. Inpatient and acute care is provided with support from paediatric services at the Oxford Children's Hospital based at the John Radcliffe Hospital. The 10 PA post advertised is a replacement post following partial retirement of current post holder, Dr Kathy Bailey, who will be returning on 4PAs. This will lead to an expansion in consultant PAs, utilising unused PAs from previous less than full time appointments. This post will join Dr Akhila Kavirayani and Dr Pam Dawson, collectively providing whole time equivalent consultants at this Paediatric Rheumatology and Chronic Pain tertiary centre.

Applicants should possess, or be within 6 months of receiving, a CCST in paediatrics (or equivalent) at the time of commencing the appointment and have had appropriate experience within a dedicated paediatric rheumatology unit. Any Consultant who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Job responsibilities

This full time post will join an enthusiastic and thriving clinical service. The position is available on a 10 PA job plan and a 1:3 telephone on-call commitment.

On call commitment:

On call is divided into two areas on a pro-rata basis:

On service: Ongoing care of in-patients with MDT meetings via teams for complex cases involving multiple specialties and complex out-patients on a pro-rata week on service basis. In patients are based on the childrens wards at the John Radcliffe, care is supported by the general paediatric and specialty teams. On average, there are 1 or 2 in patients per month, plus support and guidance for other shared patients. On-call. Day to day allocation of on-call to cover referrals and clinical queries from members of the MDT and other clinicians. Available as 7 day, 24/7 telephone advice. Objectives of the post To support the clinical team in providing a high quality secondary and tertiary rheumatology service to the children and adolescents of Oxfordshire, Thames Valley and neighbouring counties. To provide care for acutely unwell children and young people in the paediatric and intensive care setting where diagnosis is uncertain or requires multispecialty input, including HLH/MAS. To support a comprehensive paediatric chronic pain service and to link closely with the programme director for rehabilitation service, Dr Konrad Jacobs, Consultant Clinical Psychologist. Explore opportunities for further service development and collaboration with Long COVID and chronic fatigue services which are co-located at Douglas House. This will require business planning with commissioners. To support the multidisciplinary team and participate in multidisciplinary meetings To support and continue to develop clinical collaboration with other paediatric services in Oxford, especially where this may impact on rheumatology provision. To provide clinical care, education and support for further development of outreach services and a clinical network for paediatric rheumatology across Oxfordshire and neighbouring areas. To contribute to recruitment and collection of data for established research portfolio. To contribute to the development of the research portfolio To contribute to paediatric training in rheumatology and to contribute to the provision of rheumatology teaching for other postgraduate trainees. Establish and develop sub-specialty training in paediatric rheumatology. To comply with the recommendations of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health over the provision of acute and specialty services for children Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Full GMC with licence to practice MBChB or equivalent MRCPCH or equivalent Certificate of completion of training (CCT) or equivalent in paediatrics Completion of competencies for sub-specialty training in paediatric rheumatology or equivalent APLS or equivalent in date Trained to level 3 or equivalent safeguarding

Desirable

Higher medical degree Higher medical degree PhD or MD or evidence of working towards a higher academic degree Training in paediatric chronic pain. Trained in adolescent and transitional care Management qualification

Experience

Essential

Comprehensive training in Paediatrics and all aspects of paediatric rheumatology in a tertiary paediatric rheumatology centre Experience working in adolescent transition and young adult services Experience and training in managing patients with Chronic Pain Experience with independent intra articular steroid injections, both under local and general anaesthetic Prescribing of complex medication Experience of managing complex patients requiring multi-specialty input and intensive care Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems.

Desirable

Experience as Locum or substantive paediatric rheumatology consultant Experience leading and developing services for young people including transition and young adult clinics Work experience in one of the major pain centres. Experience working within a clinical network Experience of joint assessment and injection with ultrasound
