We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly Lead Biomedical Scientist to lead our busy Immunology team. You will support the team to effectively deliver pathology services to our internal and external service users

The Immunology department at Bart's Health NHS Trust is looking for a confident and motivated Chief Biomedical Scientist to lead the laboratory service. The role is a key post, developing and delivering our local, trust and network strategy. Bart's Health NHS Trust is situated in East London and is formed by The Royal London Hospital, Bart's Hospital, the London Chest Hospital, Newham University Hospital and Whipps Cross University Hospital. In addition East and South East NHS Pathology Network encompasses Homerton University Hosptial and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Immunology department provides a comprehensive service for in-patients as well as operating a regional referral service. We are a progressive and busy department looking for an enthusiastic person to lead this excellent team. You will have experience of leading an Immunology laboratory, be organised and work well under pressure

Main duties of the job

The department has state of the art flow cytometry facilities, ELISA processors, Phadia 250 analysers for autoimmunity and allergy, and automated immunofluorescence processors. The department is involved in translational research and had a range of specialist / bespoke manual assays. We are a national referral centre for some biological monitoring tests

We are supported by an active teaching-hospital environment, with a comprehensive range of accredited CPD activities and we actively encourage professional development. The Immunology department is located in a purpose built Pathology and Pharmacy Building at the Royal London Site. The laboratory is fully UKAS accredited, and has full HCPC/IBMS/STP/HSST training status.

The department is the hub service for the East and South East NHS Pathology Network, with consolidation of Immunology on the Royal London Hospital site

About us

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.

The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites. Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry; Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology; Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services; Immunology; Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology; Immunophenotyping; Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma.

The 2020/21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 822 WTE. Experience/Knowledge

Essential

Experience of effectively managing multi-disciplinary staff group, including HR issues Good knowledge of pathology disciplines Awareness of scientific developments and modern technology in Immunology and how they may influence the future of Pathology Experience of Immunofluorescence, ELISA and blot techniques Is fully aware of the principles of clinical governance and their application to Pathology Knowledge of management of quality within the laboratory including working knowledge and experience of ISO15189 A track record of implementing and managing change Extensive knowledge of routine and specialised analytical methods, quality assurance and problem solving Clinical risk assessment and resolution of problems such as complaints and governance issues. Good knowledge of managerial processes within the NHS. Interpretation of policies, national and local Extensive knowledge of national professional and NHS guidelines relating to service provision and quality.

Qualifications

Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council MSc. Biomedical Science/Immunology or IBMS Special Examination (Fellowship - FIBMS) Management and/or leadership qualification, or equivalent skills, knowledge and experience Evidence of participation in mandatory courses and CPD
