Job summary

South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Children & Young People's Speech & Language Therapy Service has a vacancy for a Band 5 speech and language therapist.

The service is jointly commissioned by local health commissioners and both Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland Local Authorities; it enjoys close collaboration with health and education colleagues.

The post is full time ( hours) and is required to provide speech and language therapy support to any children and young people (0-18 years, 0-25 with an EHCP) referred to the service. Children and young people are seen in their homes, daycare and mainstream educational settings as well as special educational settings. Travelling between locations is an essential and integral part of the post.

The Children & Young People's Speech & Language Therapy Department comprises 26 qualified therapists and 13 assistants, as well as full administrative support from 5 clerical staff. Clinical specialisms covered within the team include Early Years and School Aged SEND, autism, Eating, Drinking & Swallowing, Communication Aids, Speech & Language Disorder, Hearing Loss, Stammering. There is also a strong focus on multi-lingualism and its impact on communication development.

Main duties of the job

To develop programmes of care and provide advice concerning the care and treatment of children and young people on the caseload. Tasks include assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of care

To liaise with other colleagues involved in delivering care to children and young people, providing advice, support and guidance on speech, language & communication needs

To liaise with parents and carers providing advice, support and guidance on speech, language & communication needs

Provide day to day supervision of speech and language therapy assistants, providing support and guidance for their therapeutic delivery (This responsibility will be delegated according to experience and competence)

To contribute towards all aspects of clinical governance in the Speech & Language Therapy Service

The service offers excellent supervisory support as well as frequent and regular team meetings; a comprehensive training schedule is available to successful candidates.

The team also enjoys collaborative work with a small team of 4 colleagues providing clinical coordination, support work and administrative support for the Under 5s Neurodevelopmental Assessment Team who sit within the Children's Speech & Language Therapy service.

Qualifications & Training

Essential

Degree /diploma and licence to practise as a speech & language therapist as approved by the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists Registration as a qualified speech and language therapist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Attendance at the Trust leadership and development and improvement programme ( days)

Knowledge & Skills

Essential

Commitment to achieving completion of RCSLT NCP Framework/Competencies and Trust Preceptorship Programme within the first year Knowledge and understanding of a wide range of procedures and practices related to the identification, definition, diagnosis and remediation of disorders of human communication Understanding of a range of work procedures and practices requiring expertise within the discipline of Speech and Language Therapy underpinned by theoretical knowledge and practical experience; this may include experience with bilingual populations and understanding and use of sign language Undertaking further training specific to relevant client groups and demonstrating commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) by attending, for example, internal / external courses, Clinical Excellence Networks (CENs), case conferences, seminars, tutorials and clinical supervision sessions

Desirable

RCSLT NCP Framework/Competencies completed and signed off

Experience

Essential

Experience of delivering a range of speech and language therapy processes with children & young people, in a range of settings (this could include student placement opportunities) IT literacy including Word, excel, PowerPoint, email systems and internet searches

Desirable

Previous experience working successfully in speech and language therapy at Band 5 Experience using SystmOne or similar electronic patient record
