Rail Contract Strategy Manager

Derby, United Kingdom East Midlands Trains Full time

We are proud to be One Team at East Midlands Railway (EMR). We are passionate about keeping people safe, delighting our customers  and doing the right thing. With over 2,600 employees, our people are the reason we are so successful, and our Rail Contract Performance Team make a crucial contribution to this. Eight times accredited as a Top Employer, we value our people and are dedicated to making sure that everybody feels empowered to bring their authentic self to work.

At EMR we want to proactively embrace diversity across our workforce and recognise that we are under-represented in terms of females and ethnic minority groups. We’re therefore taking positive steps to promote a positive and inclusive culture; we welcome applications from those that identify with these groups to better represent our communities.

We have an exciting opportunity at  #TeamEMR  for you to join the Rail Contract Performance team within EMR’s Commercial function as the Rail Contract Strategy Manager. This role reports into the Head of Rail Contract Performance and is based at our Locomotive House head office in Derby.

The role of Rail Contract Strategy Manager provides a unique opportunity to gain a whole view perspective of how EMR delivers a high performing railway in the interests of customers, the taxpayer, and stakeholders through our National Rail Contract.

In the role of a Rail Contract Strategy Manager, you will act as a key point of contact interfacing between East Midlands Railway (EMR), the Department for Transport (DfT), and Transport UK Group enabling successful delivery of contractual commitments and developing strategic approaches for navigating complex contractual waters. You will support maximising the contractual position and help to minimise risks through delivery of EMR’s contract management approach.

Working with two direct reports, you will also work closely with functions across EMR providing support and counsel, ensuring that progress against contractual commitments is accurately recorded in the appropriate systems to meet the needs of both the DfT, EMR and Transport UK Group (TUKG).

Within the Rail Contract Performance team, you will develop an understanding of how, through our National Rail Contract and our relationship with the Department for Transport, we support EMR in delighting our customers  and doing the right thing

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Work collaboratively with Business Leads to appropriately evidence delivery of contractual commitments to satisfy the DfT requirements.  Work in conjunction with Business Leads to create and maintain appropriate risk registers; working with Business Leads and the wider Rail Contract Performance Team to highlight compliance risks and opportunities. Produce timely and accurate reporting to senior leadership level stakeholders, both internal and external. Work with colleagues across the Transport UK Group to identify, share and ensure implementation of best practice within EMR for contract management related matters.

Key Skills & Experience

Degree level or demonstrable examples of an ability to critique, evaluate and digest materials across a wide range of (sometimes unfamiliar) topics.  An in depth understanding (or the enthusiasm to develop this understanding) of the mechanics of contracts, and commercial and financial frameworks. Excellent commercial acumen in complex and changing environments, with the confidence to operate in high pressure situations. An attention to detail with the ability to produce a wide range of high-quality output for internal and external stakeholders. An ability to influence and inspire others both within and outside EMR to achieve desired outcomes through well thought out and developed thinking. Good working knowledge of MS Office suite with a natural aptitude for learning new systems, processes, and technology. A methodical and proactive approach to planning. Ability to manage numerous tasks simultaneously and respond to a wide range of complex and conflicting interests.

If you don’t think you’ve got all the above, but you have the drive and enthusiasm for this role with the potential to grow, please still consider applying. We’d really like to hear from you.

As well as a competitive salary, we’ll also offer you:

Excellent Railway Pension scheme Free standard travel on East Midlands Railway and Train Operating Companies under Transport UK Friends and Family discounted Tickets on the EMR Network 32 Days paid leave, increasing to 34 after 2 years’ service 75% discount on National Travel (inc partner and dependants) Various training opportunities …and many more

EMR has a hybrid working policy which is applicable for this role. This means the role can be based at home 2-3 days per week and in the office 2-3 days per week. Should you wish to work full time in the office this is also an option. It is expected that the office location is primarily Locomotive House Derby, there is also an expectation that there will days with in-person meetings in London (e.g., at the Department for Transport’s offices)

We are open minded to applications from people who wish to have flexible working. Many of the team work flexibly in many different ways. Please talk to us at interview about the flexibility you need. We can’t promise to give you exactly what you want, but we do promise not to judge you for asking.
