The role of Senior Staff Nurse, in the Older Adults Division has been developed to create a new and innovative career pathway for experienced nurses who wish to pursue clinical excellence and drive the quality agenda on our wards. Working closely with Matrons, Clinical Leads and Allied Health Professionals and taking a key role in supervision within the nursing team.
You will be supported to pursue further professional development aligned to divisional priorities for patients, which include, dementia, older adult specific mental health problems, therapies, frailty, physical health and tissue viability.
Reporting into the Ward Manager, you would be working in a multi-faceted role encompassing training and development, clinical governance, quality and continuous improvement as well as a heavy focus on developing and improving care planning, implementing research and evidence based practice.

Main duties of the job
To take a lead role in the ward based nursing team, with responsibility for:
- Clinical priorities for the older adult mental health division, that include; older
adult specific mental health, dementia, frailty and physical healthcare, to lead
at ward or divisional level the sharing of best practice and innovation to benefit
the whole division
-To support and supervise staff to enhance the skills, knowledge and expertise
of the team in line with current evidence based research, training and
modelling in line with their specialist knowledge
-Delivery of clinical supervision for junior nursing and healthcare support staff
-To co-ordinate the nursing elements of care delivery as part of the wider multidisciplinary team
-Act as Named Nurse where required for ensuring co-ordination of assessing,
planning and providing management guidance on interventions for complex
presentations
-To lead on local quality improvement initiatives, delivery of outcomes following
RCAs and investigations, CQC assurance and local audit
-To recognise situations that may be detrimental to the health and well-being of
the service users and carers with the aim of providing shared and agreed plan
of care for resolving the crisis situation and preventing further crisis situations
from occurring
-To support embedding both the national and locally agreed clinical and
professional standards within the service.
-To support the development and review of service outcomes

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Professional responsibilities
- To maintain registration and all professional and personal development
requirements.
-To support and contribute towards the organisation’s clinical governance
systems, supporting quality standards and work towards the continuous
improvement in clinical and service quality.

-To observe and practice in accordance with adult safeguarding guidelines and
report as appropriate in line with policy and process.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Senior Staff Nurse in older adult inpatient wards providing enhanced knowledge
and skills, linking with the matron agenda, community specialist nurses and
specific care pathways.
-To supervise junior nursing staff, supporting day-to-day practice and ongoing
development
-To provide and contribute to the effective assessment of patients and lead the
nursing element of the development of multi-disciplinary care plans
-To ensure that positive risk management, patient safety and reduction of harm is
at the centre of ward nursing practice.
-To both be Named Nurse/Key worker for an identified cohort of patients and
support junior staff in their role, specifically when aligned to complex needs,
specialist knowledge and multi-agency working.
-To support the development, implementation and monitoring of standards, both
locally defined and nationally prescribed.
-To support the development, implementation and review of effective policies and
procedures.
-To recieve lessons learned and contribute to the development and
implementation of action plans.
-To ensure the clinical environment being conducive to learning for junior staff,
student nurses and the wider MDT.
-To provide educational material for staff, service users, family members and
other professional groups as required
-To have a contemporary working knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983 and
its applications in practice, the rights of patients and any future amendments.
- To deliver clinical supervision and ensure a commitment to their own supervision
requirements as per policy.
- To be responsible for supporting the maintenance of clinical standards in the
ward environment and across the division, working closely with Older Adult
Matrons
- Work with the ward managers to ensure equitable use of all resources to support
an effective service.
- To support the instigation and continuation of CQC standards, infection control
standards, National patient safety standards and standards for better health.
Educational and Research responsibilities
-Develop and implement internal learning processes to evaluate and monitor the
assessment process.
-To participate on relevant research projects relating to the service
-To ensure clinical practice develops through the critical analysis and evaluation of
evidence based research findings
-To take opportunities to develop specialist knowledge in line with the role
requirements, personal development conversations and needs of the service.
Management responsibilities
- To attend relevant steering groups and forums appropriate to the development of
the Inpatient Services.
- To be consistent and active in improving and evaluating the effectiveness of the
service through feedback from service users.
- To conduct appraisals and Supervision within the team, being aware of the
particular developing needs of staff
-To assist in the recruitment and selection of staff.
Communication
-To be responsible for promoting the service within BCHFT and social care
economy and wider partnership.
- Identify and mitigate any barriers to effective communication.
- To promote liaison and inter agency working and collaboration
- To be support the development and maintenance of effective lines of
communication on complex matters, issues and ideas, between staff, service
users and carers.
- To represent the team at appropriate meetings and ensure information is
cascaded to the team.
Leadership Skills
- To promote the ethos of a flexible service, that places service users and their
family at the centre of their care
- To promote the values and ethos of the service in line with the principles and the
policy implementation guidelines.
- To promote equity and equality in accessibility to the service.
