Job summary

Applications are invited from suitably experienced individuals for the post of Medical Laboratory Assistant within the Clinical Chemistry laboratory of our Blood Sciences Department, based at Birmingham Women's Hospital.

The successful applicant will work in the Clinical Chemistry/ Foetal Anamoly Screening Reception. They will ensure the timely preparation of specimens to aid diagnosis and treatment. The post holder will also assist with the maintenance and running of laboratory equipment and support the point of care service.

The Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust provides the widest range of paediatric and maternity services for Birmingham, the West Midlands and beyond, with over 300,000 patient visits every year. The Chemistry Laboratory includes the FAS service, one of the largest in the Country

You will be joining the department at the beginning of an exciting transformation as the two department merges.

We are looking for a highly motivated and competent individual to enhance the team.

The post holder will be expected to participate in the Clinical Chemistry out of hour's service. As we progress with our modernisation there is an expectation that your routine place of work may include both hospitals

Main duties of the job

Area to be worked in

Receipt of all samples for Clinical Chemistry and Foetal Anomaly Screening

Receipt and dispatch of Research and Development samples

Sample preparation for analytical platforms.

Data entry for all samples

Sending samples onto specialist laboratories

Receipt of deliveries and forward movement to the correct department.

Welcoming of visitor for all Pathology areas

Clerical and Administration duties as required

Collection of samples from Clinical areas

Basic Analyser maintenance

Result entry and checking.

Knowledge across a range of work procedures and practices underpinned by theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience. Typing experience Familiar with basic computer operation and word processing.

Working in a paediatric reception area Ability to deal with paediatric samples Knowledge of Clinical Terminology Previous experience in a paediatric laboratory environment Experience with laboratory IT systems and document management Example of working within an NHS team
