Job overview

Our busy Children’s Department covers two sites – Queens Hospital in Romford and King George’s Hospital in Ilford. We deliver a comprehensive range of general medical and surgical services to our local population and have two inpatient wards, one with a co-located 4 bedded HDU, we also have 2 CYPAU's across the sites CYPAU -QH and Dahlia at KGH). There is a day unit with a POSCU and haematology service, two outpatients departments with a GP ‘hot clinic’, a team of Clinical Nurse Specialists and a Children’s Community Nursing team.

Our well established 32 cot level 2 NICU has both community and outreach teams to support babies on discharge.

We have two ED’s for children, one on each site, and their combined attendances are among the busiest in the country with over 62,000 children’s attendances each year.

You’ll also be playing your part in preparing the NHS for the future. We’re proud to be one of only five Trusts in the country to secure a place on the ground-breaking Virginia Mason Institute Programme to transform patient care, and we’re also one of eight new, national Vanguard sites spearheading transformational change in urgent and emergency care.

Applications are then invited to apply for our Newly Qualified Band 5 to apply for 12 month rotation programme across Tropical Lagoon, NICU and Children Emergency Department. Following the rotation successful candidates will be interviewed and places into permanent roles within one of these areas. The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills, an ability to work as part of the multi-disciplinary team and has a positive attitude to service developments. Under the leadership of our Chair Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, we provide care for the residents of three of the most diverse London boroughs. More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We’re also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.
