Job summary

Principal Duties of the Post

This post involves working within both the inpatient and outpatient settings, across the whole range of mental health services within the Trust.

This post involves working closely with a large multi-disciplinary team managing secondary care patients with mental illness.

The post holder provides medical support to the mental health team working under the supervision of a senior psychiatrist.

Practitioners should be prepared to perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances without additional remuneration but may be granted time off in lieu at the discretion of the Trust.

Commitments arising in such circumstances are, however, exceptional and practitioners should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.

The final combination of Southern Health and Solent NHS Trust services is expected in late 2024, when our new organisation, to be known as Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, will be formed.

Our new Trust will continue to cater to the unique needs of different communities, making healthcare across the county more accessible, as well as offering staff more opportunities for career development, training and partnership working.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Recognised basic Medical Degree. Full GMC Registration with license to practice.

Desirable

MRCPsych. Section 12(2) approved.

Experience

Essential

4 years at full-time postgraduate training or higher or equivalent experience with at least 2 years in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty. Previous experience of working in psychiatry. Excellent knowledge in specialty. Excellent clinical skills using biopsychosocial perspective and wide medical knowledge. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty. Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others. Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA. Able to work cooperatively as part of a team, delegate appropriately and see tasks through to completion.

Desirable

Proven commitment to improving the quality of clinical care. Experience of crisis, inpatient or community mental health team care for adults. Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service. Experience in liaison psychiatry or other acute psychiatry settings.

Additional Criteria

Essential

Ability to take a full Psychiatric history, mental state and physical examination of patients. Ability to manage own time, workload and prioritise clinical workload. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Dictate clear, concise letters to other professionals. Competent to work without direct supervision. Ability to use IT, including e-mail and the internet. Knowledge of different models of care. Understand principles of teaching and learning. Ability to deal effectively with stress. Enthusiasm for speciality. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively during challenging conversations. Reliable and honest. Flexible approach to working practise. Positive approach to the job planning and appraisal process. Works well and respects the roles and skills of whole multi-disciplinary team. Ability to fulfil the travelling commitment of the post with transport within the parameters of the Equality Act. Ability to fulfil the duties of the post including on-call. Satisfactory DBS enhanced disclosure and Health check.

Desirable

Evidence of performance that is above average. Knowledge of Risk Management. Demonstrate use of evidence-based practise. Previous experience of working in General Adult Psychiatric services. Enthusiasm for teaching. Experience of supporting an MDT in conjunction with support from consultant colleagues.
