Job summary
We are seeking a dynamic Consultant Psychiatrist for our Older Adult in-patient ward, Ellington Ward, based in the Harrow Mental Health Centre, Northwick Park Hospital.
The successful candidate will have excellent leadership qualities. They will be highly motivated and passionate about delivering high quality care for older adults with acute and chronic psychiatric condition.
Main duties of the job
Together with the ward manager, the post-holder will provide overall clinical leadership for the ward multidisciplinary team as well as direct clinical assessments, consultations, risk assessments and care plans.
The post-holder will also be expected to lead on, in partnership with the modern matron, quality improvement initiatives and service evaluation projects and will be encouraged to lead on research.
Other duties include:
Attendance at daily huddles Clinical supervision of trainees and specialty doctors working with the team Responsible Clinician duties Regular clinical liaison with older adult community mental health teams Regular liaison with families and carers Regular liaison with other stakeholders as appropriate eg Mental Health Act
About us
The Harrow Older Adult services also include the Harrow Older Adult CMHT, the older adult Home treatment Team and Memory service. All based in Bentley House, Harrow Wealdstone.
In addition, the Northwick Park Mental Health Unit has an ECT suite, two adult wards, the home treatment team, the psychiatric liaison service and Harrow management team. Consultant and junior doctor offices and are based within the management suite This ensure that the ward staff feel part of the broader Harrow mental service.
Ellington is an 18-bed older adults inpatient ward. The inpatient care is delivered by an integrated multi-disciplinary team with a shared sense of ownership for the ward environment as well as the clinical services provided. The post-holder will adopt a pragmatic leadership style as a way of promoting this type of ward environment, thus ensuring collaborative working both at a clinical and an operational level.

Provide senior medical responsibility for the assessment and management of patients on the ward Oversight of and contribution to robust care planning, risk assessment and risk management processes. Support recruitment and ensure optimal retention of team members and uphold morale Ensure good service quality and performance Ensure training needs of psychiatry trainees and medical students are met as well as supporting training of other junior clinical staff Provide senior medical responsibility for the assessment and management of patients on the ward Oversight of and contribution to robust care planning, risk assessment and risk management processes. Education and Qualifications
Essential
Medical Degree MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
Desirable
MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management Relevant higher degree ( MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications
Clinical Skills, Knowledge and Experience
Essential
Experience of assessing and treating patients in acute and community psychiatric settings Experience of leading a multidisciplinary team Evidence of interest in older adult Mental Health Excellent clinical skills using biopsycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge Excellent oral and written communication skills in English Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty Demonstrate the leadership skills required to function successfully as a Consultant Psychiatrist IT skills relevant to working in a modern NHS environment
Desirable
Knowledge of recent developments and drug advances in perinatal psychiatry Knowledge of key issues associated with the development of Acute older Adult Health Services Knowledge of NHS planning and commissioning processes Experience in older adult Mental Health Services Other relevant experience ( specific psychological therapies)
Eligibility
Essential
Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment
Desirable
In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice
Transport
Essential
Holds and will use valid UK driving licence OR provides evidence of proposed alternative.-
