Job Purpose

To assume a senior leadership role as the Research Director of the School of Education, leading a team of academics in associated roles (research directorate) to promote an inclusive, intellectually diverse and rigorous research culture of the highest integrity in the School with a research reputation founded on the strengths of the School’s project portfolio, publications, engagement and impact. The standard term for Research Director is 4 years, with a possible 2 year extension (the substantive post of Professor of Education is open ended). The RD role is for 500 hours a year (out of a total 1540 hours). The Research Director will be tasked with enhancing the research infrastructure of the School in collaboration with the College of Social Sciences Research Support Office and will oversee the School’s preparations ahead of REF 2029. Key responsibilities include: • Leading the strategic direction of the School’s research and knowledge exchange (RKE) activity and performance, to drive growth in high quality research income, outputs and impact• Overseeing Glasgow’s Unit of Assessment 23 preparation for the REF.• Enhancing the School’s research culture, supporting staff to achieve their full potential as researchers in a collegial environment.• Liaising with leaders from the Research Centres and Research and Teaching Groups (RTGs) to ensure effective delivery of RKE.• Managing the School’s bid review processes to ensure the highest quality of submitted bids.• Driving the School’s publications strategy.• Advising the School Senior Leadership Team on the strategic development of RKE in the School, in particular with respect to investment requirements.• Contributing to College research leadership through participation in relevant formal and informal processes, including College Research Directors’ Meeting; RKE Committee and External Engagement Committee, as well as quarterly meetings with College on the School’s RKE strategy and performance.• Overseeing the School’s commitments to contract research staff under the national Concordat.• Chairing the School Research Committee .• Contributing to the formulation of the School’s PGR strategy as a member of the PGR Committee.• Liaising with the School’s Scholarship Champion in the support of scholarship activities in the School.• Forging and maintaining external relations essential to the School’s research, promoting the University as required to external bodies and organisations and enhancing its reputation, profile and influence in Scottish, UK and international forums. As Professor of Education you will also be expected to conduct internationally leading research; to deliver research-led education; demonstrate excellence in teaching that supports the strategic objectives and priorities of the School of Education and College of Social Sciences; to undertake substantial responsibilities associated with managing external stakeholder relationships that enhance the University’s reputation; as well as to advance knowledge exchange, public understanding and outreach, and strengthen links with professional bodies. Main Duties and Responsibilities 1. Provide leadership across the School of Education and College of Social Sciences through the role of Research Director in the School of Education as outlined above. This involves leading a team of academics, managing the School’s publication profile, external grants pipeline, research culture, professional development, and overseeing preparations for submission to the Research Excellence Framework (REF).2. Sustain internationally leading high-quality research activity, through high-quality outputs in peer reviewed journals and seeking and securing funding for a portfolio of research projects through grant applications to external funding bodies, e.g. Research Councils, and mentoring early career staff to support their development in securing funding.3. Take a leading role across the School and College in relation to strategic learning and teaching initiatives through: embedding a research-led, evidence-based ethos in teaching and learning; leading on teaching collaborations and teaching innovations; influencing teaching and assessment practices and policy across the School/College.4. Undertake academic management and leadership roles and responsibilities across the School and College in a manner that enhances the local and global reputation of the School.5. Demonstrate leadership in supervising research projects undertaken by research staff, postgraduate and undergraduate students and ensure the effective development of the staff and students. Actively engage with potential research students of high calibre intending to undertake postgraduate and doctoral research, building effective working relationships and supervising to completion.6. Make a substantial contribution to University Committees/Working Groups to ensure the advancement of research, research integrity, reputation, engagement and impact.7. Build effective internal and external collaborations to support the development and mentoring of academic staff and their learning, and to enhance research within the School and College.8. Represent the School/College/University on key external bodies and at significant external events nationally and internationally to promote excellence in research and teaching, and the development of professional practice.9. Ensure a substantial track record of, and demonstrate leadership in, knowledge creation and transfer, ensuring impact on external bodies and contributions to public understanding and contributing fully to key strategic initiatives that underpin School, College and University strategies for external engagement.10. Engage in and offer continuing professional development activities as appropriate.11. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.12. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, Inspiring People Changing The World. Qualifications Essential: A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD/EdD) or equivalent in related discipline with an extensive and established reputation in research and significant teaching experience within the discipline/subject area.A2 An established and internationally-recognised reputation for high-quality research and knowledge exchange in subject specialism.A3 A thorough understanding of, and track record in, contributing to broader academic leadership and management at School/RI/Service/College level and engagement with priorities of University/College/Service strategies, aims and ambitions. Knowledge, Skills and Experience Essential :C1 Comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of research issues and debates, both nationally and internationally, and future direction of research and teaching in a specialist subject area and education research more widely.C2 Maintaining a portfolio of research activity and outputs of international quality, reputation, and impact.C3 Critical understanding of research quality and administrative frameworks and heuristics used to assess and proxy research quality, such as the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF) and various metrics.C4 Track record of research income generation from a range of sources and of supporting and mentoring colleagues in applying for research income.C5 Proven ability to lead and deliver high quality and innovative research-led teaching, including assessment and curriculum development.C6Providing academic leadership across the School/College, leading innovation, and management of research, setting standards and monitoring progress.C7 Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills and ability to foster collegiality and collaborative working.C8 Proven ability to foster research collaborations with academic and professional services colleagues in other disciplines, Schools, Colleges and Universities as appropriate.
