Locum Consultant in Neurointensive Care

Summary

Job Title:

Locum Consultant Appointment in Neurointensive Care Medicine.

Clinical work will be based on the Neurointensive Care Unit. There may be the opportunity to contribute to the Critical Care Outreach Service, as well as to a secondary specialty, subject to negotiation.

The exact arrangement of clinical work for successful candidates will be agreed through negotiation.

Hours of Work (per week): 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) consisting of 7.5 PAs of direct clinical care (DCC) with 2.5 PAs for supporting professional activity (SPAs).

Applications are invited for the post of locum consultant intensivist on the neurointensive care unit (NICU) at St George's Hospital. NICU is a 18 bed specialist tertiary referral unit providing care for neurosurgical, neurology and stroke patients.

This is an opportunity for an excellent individual to join the critical care team of a progressive London teaching hospital. There are also developments in research, advanced neuro-monitoring, and a new shock pathway, providing the perfect opportunity for a new team member to develop their own interests and support the growth of the department and the directorate.

Applicants should have the FFICM or an equivalent intensive care qualification. They should have a proven track record of interest in neurointensive care, and commensurate clinical experience/training.

Main duties of the job

Job Summary:

Post holders will:

Provide clinical leadership to a multidisciplinary team delivering Critical Care

Engage in associated Service Development, Clinical Governance and Quality Improvement work

Contribute to the education and supervision of students and trainees

Support Directorate-wide Research activities

Contribute to the clinical management of the base unit

It is envisaged that the post holder will carry out the majority of their duties as a Consultant Intensivist on the Neurointensive Care Unit. There are opportunities for some DCC time to be allocated to contribute to the Critical Care Outreach Service or to pursue a secondary clinical speciality. We currently have Consultants who split their time across Anaesthesia, Medical Specialties, St George's Medical School, HEMS, the Military and wider Trust/NHS managerial roles.

We would encourage interested applicants to get in touch for an informal discussion about how an alternative secondary specialty interest could be accommodated.

About us

Trust Vision and Values

The post holder is expected to have a clear understanding of how this post contributes to the achievement of the Trust's vision:

Our vision as an organisation is to provide outstanding care, every time.

In 2019, we published a five-year strategy which sets out how we plan to achieve this - whilst also giving everyone connected with St George's clarity about our aims and ambitions for the future.

Our strategy is designed to drive decision-making across our two main sites at St George's Hospital in Tooting, and Queen Mary's Hospital in Roehampton plus services we run in the community.

With over 9,000 dedicated staff caring for patients around the clock, we are the largest healthcare provider in southwest London.

St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust serves a population of 1.3 million across southwest London. A large number of services, such as cardiothoracic medicine and surgery, neurosciences and renal transplantation, also cover significant populations from Surrey and Sussex, totalling around 3.5 million people.

The trust also provides care for patients from a larger catchment area in southeast England, for specialties such as complex pelvic trauma. Other services treat patients from all over the country, such as family HIV care and bone marrow transplantation for non-cancer diseases. The trust also provides a nationwide state-of-the-art endoscopy training centre.

Job responsibilities

Main Duties and Job Plan

Please see the Job Summary section above for a description of the expected duties of the post-holder. The job plan will be fully annualised. Current job planning guidance at St Georges expects consultants to work a minimum of 42 clinical weeks per year. There is flexibility in the number of PA commitments that existing consultants offer to the trust and applicants wishing to work less than 10 PAs are encouraged to apply.

The post holder will be required to participate in the NICU consultant on-call rota. There are 2 rotas on each unit that run in parallel. The first, so-called 1st on rota is a seven-day duty period running Monday to Monday, including Saturday and Sunday nights. The 2nd on rota provides for second consultant weekday cover and includes that weekday night.

The post holder will have the option of spending a portion of Direct Clinical Care with the Critical Care Outreach service, which provides 7-day a week 07:45 to 17:45 consultant cover. There is also the opportunity to be involved with the SW London Adult Critical Care Transfer Service and the ICU Survivorship Service.

There is prospective cover for all rotas, hence the post holder is expected to liaise with their consultant colleagues in providing internal cover for annual, study and professional leave, and this may require some flexibility in the post holders hours. The post holder is expected to be flexible both in terms of session and day of the week for additional ICU clinical and supporting work.
