Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 3 Speech and LanguageTherapy Assistant to be based in our in-house rehabilitation setting.

This is an excellent opportunity to join the rehabilitationteam, working as a discipline-specific assistant alongside the Speech andLanguage Therapist and other multi-disciplinary team members, includingPhysiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Psychology teams. We will offer asupportive working environment in which to develop your clinical andinterpersonal skills, and structured in-service training programme with directsupport to complete multidisciplinary competencies. Previous experience of careand/or rehabilitation of adults is desirable.

The care team at Peartree House provides a 24 hour careapproach, with support from the therapy team across a 5 day service, coveringthe hours of 8am 4pm with opportunities for weekend working. The successfulapplicant must be able to meet these core requirements but reasonableflexibility can be discussed.

Main duties of the job

The team provides an intensive, client-centredrehabilitation service and complex nursing care to adults following acquired brain injuries, whichcovers strokes, road traffic accidents, seizures or brain tumours or other neurological conditions. There is ahigh level of patient contact while working primarily in support withoccupational therapy, nursing and physiotherapy. As part of the team, you will berequired to participate in the therapy management of a varied brain injuryclinical caseload and facilitating discharge into the community whereappropriate.

Some of the tasks youwill be expected to do:

- Ensure good communication is maintained acrossservices

- Support with the provision of therapy plans forthe in-house speech and language therapy clients, in alignment with theirrehabilitation or management goals

-Support the in-house speech and language therapyservice in delivering dysphagia (swallowing difficulties) education andtraining in accordance with IDDSI

-Create necessary resources to support patients,families and staff to follow communication, dysphagia and oral hygienerecommendations

We will offer a supportive working environment in which todevelop your clinical and interpersonal skills, a structured in-servicetraining programme, and appraisal, supervision system. Extensive training willbe provided in order to gain or develop the required skills and competencies,including some housekeeping and equipment maintenance duties.

Peartree House Rehabilitation is a privatespecialist unit based in Southampton. Through active inpatient neurologicalrehabilitation, community rehabilitation, slow stream rehabilitation andlong-term complex care, we pride ourselves on providing goal-driven,patient-centred interventions. The service focuses on managing a range ofdeficits caused by an acquired brain injury and neurological problems, with theaim of reintegration into community, family, social, education and worksituations. We employ a large therapy team who will support your development. A full time position is preferred,but consideration will be given to part time hours. A comprehensive internaland external CPD programme is in place.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Underthe guidance and supervision of qualified therapists:

Assist with the assessment and treatment of patientson an individual and group basis.

Carry out delegated therapeuticactivities/rehabilitation programmes as part of the patients designatedtreatment plan, observing patients response to the treatment being received,liaising with the speech and language therapist.

Supervise patients in practicing and following throughtheir rehabilitation programmes.

To teach and demonstrate use of equipment andtechniques to optimise function, independence and safety.

Toassist in motivating patients to participate in their treatment regime usingappropriate communication strategies.

Toundertake a basic assessment of each patients condition prior and duringintervention or as a response to any treatment, by observing any significantchange or analysing variations and accurately reporting these to the primarytherapist

To be responsible for maintaining accurate writtenrecords using SOAP recording system and use of computerised data collection includingusing electronic record system.

To demonstrate an awareness of clinical risk and tomanage clinical risk within own caseload, including observing patients in allsituations ensuring safety and security at all times.

To develop therapeutic relationships with patients andcarers, communicating in a way respecting their views, autonomy and culture.

To be able to cope with occasional, potentiallystressful, upsetting or emotional situations in an empathetic manner.

Toensure appropriate precautions are taken to maintain patient dignity andrespect at all times
