Specialty Doctor within Anaesthetics - 10 PA's - Permanent

Tameside & Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust is seeking applications to appoint Specialty Doctors (Staff Grade level) in the Anaesthetic Department. The post holder will be based solely at Tameside General Hospital at this time, but it is possible that you will be required to cover work at a sister hospital as part of Healthier together programme. Candidates will be expected to have at least 2 to 3 years experience in Anaesthetics.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide middle grade surgeon support to the Consultants and SHO including clinical work and operating lists, at times independent of direct supervision. To work to sustain the provision of an efficient Anaesthetic service to patients, including ensuring, in conjunction with colleagues, the highest quality of care is provided to each individual patient in meeting and delivering its local and national colleagues in Anaesthetics also form part of the 2nd on call rota covering Maternity and ITU and on occasions 1st on Call.

Job responsibilities

THE DIRECTORATE OF ANAESTHESIA Intensive Care Unit Originally comprised of a 9 bed Intensive Care Unit with a breakdown of 6 level 3 and 3 level 2 beds, we have recently upgraded our capacity to two Intensive Care Units with a capacity of 9 and 6 respectively, to cope with the national challenge of COVID-19. Current split is between a 9 bed non COVID ICU on the first floor, and a 6 bed ICU space for COVID patients. Current capacity is for level 3 patients but a COVID level 2 provision is embedded in this.

The Trust runs a COVID respiratory therapy level 2 facility of 6 beds in theatre suite, which is mainly run by the respiratory team, with support from the critical care team.

This escalated capacity may revert back to the original 9 bed capacity plan, but will have an impact on the job plan for this job. It may have a higher proportion of DCC in intensive care as compared to anaesthesia initially during the pandemic and later on revert to a job plan withmajor activity in anaesthetics.

Theatres The Theatre Suite consists of nine theatres, a major treatment room within the single site and one maternity theatre, all of whichare equipped to modern standards. There are dedicated paediatric and adult recovery areas and facilities to manage high care patients for resuscitation. There is a separate Obstetric Suite with operating theatre.

Offices The Department of Anaesthetics has offices for Consultants, noncareer grade doctors and the Pain Nurses with computer facilities with internet access. There is a dedicated seminar room equipped with full audio-visual equipment including a slide projector, large screen TV and video recorder; the room is used for regular departmental meetings and sponsored talks. A small departmental library is available.

Secretarial Support Secretarial assistance is provided by an office manager, two secretaries and a clerical officer.

SERVICE PROVISION Services The Department provides Anaesthetic services on a single site, to Tameside General Hospital for General Surgery, Vascular, Orthopaedic, ENT and Oral Surgery, Obstetrics & service is also provided to the Accident & Emergency Department, the Intensive Care Unit and the Psychiatric Department (for ECTs). There is major anaesthetic involvement in the Intensive Care successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in the development of further services at the Trust.Emergency Surgery is particularly well catered for; 11 theatre sessions are provided each week for trauma, and five for general surgery. In addition, there is 24 hour cover for all emergencies, though after 12 am the policy of operating only on life or limb threatening cases or maternity is in active acute pain team is in operation. The Trust also provides a non-acute pain Hospice for the terminally ill is located adjacent to the Hospital.Patients of a Paediatrics age are managed at Tameside, however there is a directorate policy, to refer all children under the age of 2 years requiring surgery to the near by childrens hospital. The Department follows the recommendations produced by The Royal College of Anaesthetists for anaesthetising children. There is an ongoing review of Paediatric surgical services in the North West.

EQUIPMENT All operating theatre suites are equipped to recognised modern standards and recommendations

4. RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES The successful candidate will join a team of dedicated medical and nursing staff committed to providing a high quality anaesthetic service to the people of Tameside and Glossop.

Clinical The appointee will be expected to participate in the overall provision of Anaesthetic services within the department, to deputise for absent colleagues, to work flexibly, to ensure service and patient care, to achieve value for money through making the most effective use of available resources. This job description is intended to cover the main parts of the post; the actual pattern of work is negotiable to meet service and training needs.Applicants should enquire regarding any items they may be unsure a month, the majority of clinical work is cancelled for one session for audit and CEPOD.

Training and Post Graduate Education The college tutor has overall responsibility of supervising training and organisation of educational programmes. The Trust is recognised by the Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Post Graduate Dean for Teaching. The prime teaching role of the consultant is the regular instruction of the training grades on a day to day basis during the course of clinical work. It is expected that the consultant will supervise training grade clinical work as an everyday routine and fulfil an active teaching role within the North West, South SHO School of Anaesthesia.

CME is deemed important by the Department of Anaesthetics. All members are required by the Royal College of Anaesthetists to attend meetings regularly to update their education. Study leave support is given in this regard. Management The senior operational decision making body of the Trust is The Operational and Clinical Management Board which comprises the Chief Executive and other Executive Directors, Medical Director and Lead Clinicians.
