Purpose of the role

As part of the design team the Childrenswear Design
Assistant is responsible for the research, design and development of brand
right and commercial product. They will be excellent at collaborating with the
design team, as well as the buying, merchandising and tech teams and suppliers
in order to ensure the product is of the highest standard. They must be driven
and creative, always bringing brand right newness into the business. Previous Childrenswear experience with an strong eye for colour/print/design would
be advantageous.

Responsibilities:

Reporting
the Design function in



  • Supporting Senior
    Childrenswear Designer in creating seasonal colour palette and arranging lab
    dips for Suppliers.
  • Researching
    all product areas to support in designing a commercial Childrenswear range.
    Identifying newness; awareness of emerging trends and colours, print/ graphics
    and fabric.
  • Assist Senior Childrenswear
    Designer in creating design packs and liaison with supply base to develop
    protos.
  • Prepare
    artworks for factory development.
  • Product
    Development – support designer on communicating with suppliers on the product
    development cycle, eg. sending out packs, sending approvals of
    fabrics/colour/trim.
  • Supporting Senior
    Childrenswear Designer in preparation for all key product meetings; cad reviews
    to sign off presentations.
  • Ensure range
    plans up to date and ready for sign-off meetings.
  • Assist in
    setting up room for meetings and presentations.
  • Note taking
    during presentations if required.
  • Presenting
    range to management at sketch review.

  • Accountable for the ownership of
    key areas within Childrenswear
  • Multitask orientated with the
    ability to work to tight deadlines.
  • Accountable for hitting all
    critical path deadlines.
  • Following the seasonal process
    from concept to product handover.
  • Attend and participate in Childrenswear weekly
    fit sessions.
  • Strong teamwork across the design
    function as well as working closely with Buying, Merchandising and Tech
    teams. 
  • Proactively finding all sales and
    brand knowledge needed to build a balanced range
  • Accountable for bringing a high
    level of creativity
  • Manage samples and swatches when
    they need to be sent to Suppliers.
  • Strong communicator.


Cross-functional working

  • Working with the options given by
    Merchandising and understanding the range balance.
  • Collaboratively working with tech
    teams in fits to make sure quality is excellent and design intent is met.
  • Working with the rest of the
    design team on joint projects and ranges as well as any departmental jobs to
    help the department run smoothly.
  • Knowledge of best/ worst sellers and who our
    customer is.

  • Knowledge of retail sales and ability to apply it to new ranges.
    Creative but commercial designs.
  • A strong working relationship with the Senior Childrenswear Designer and key business partners especially Product, Merch and
    Tech.

    and across the DBMT teams.

  • Lead by example.
  • Thrives on working
    in a fast-paced environment
  • Print/ Graphics experience would be great, but not a must have.

Key Skills & Experience: 

Essential



  • A minimum of 1 years experience in a similar brand, or
    comparable retailer, work at a Design Assistant capacity
  • Ability to influence & communicate effectively, with
    excellent people skills
  • Computer literate (Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, Microsoft
    Word, Excel)
  • Excellent design and CAD skills, with an eye for detail.
