Scientific Officer

Sutton, United Kingdom The Institute of Cancer Research Full time

Under the leadership of Dr Sally George we are seeking a highly motivated Scientific Officer to work in the Developmental Oncology Group based in Sutton. The position will provide scientific support for the laboratory. Responsibilities will include maintaining an efficient and safe laboratory and organising laboratory supplies. Lab based work will include in-vitro cell culture work with the opportunity to perform experiments using these models (e.g. western blotting, PCR, immunofluorescence) to address specific hypotheses. This post will complement our team of three post-doctoral fellows and one PhD student who are focused on obtaining a better understanding of the biology of difficult to treat tumours of childhood in order to identify specific therapeutic vulnerabilities.

Key Requirements

The successful candidate must have a B.Sc. or equivalent in biochemistry, molecular biology or cell biology

Department/Directorate Information

Dr Sally George is a team leader, within the division of Clinical Studies and the Centre for Paediatric Oncology Experimental Medicine (POEM). She is an academic clinician with a track record in translational research, including the identification of specific therapeutic vulnerabilities in neuroblastoma (George et al, EBioMedicine 2020, George et al, JECCR 2020) and the development of clinical biomarker initiatives for children with cancer (George et al EJC, 2019, Bellini et al JCO, 2021, Stankunaite et al 2022). She is also the Chief Investigator of ‘MIBG-PARP’ a transatlantic phase I/II clinical trial for children with relapsed/refractory neuroblastoma. During a secondment to the Francis Crick Institute, she developed expertise in human stem cell models and identified mechanisms of differentiation block relevant to understanding both to the drivers of oncogenesis and therapeutic resistance in neuroblastoma.

Building on this experience she established The Developmental Oncology Team at ICR in 2023, focusing on building a greater insight into the developmental biology of childhood cancers to drive therapeutic discoveries.
