Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will have a shared responsibility for the leadership and provision of nursing care for the 35 bedded emergency surgical unit, ensuring quality and standards are line with the organisations Nursing assessments performance framework.
  • The post-holder will support the budget holder for the Ward area, also supported by the Matron, deliver the required level of service within the ward established budget.
  • Participate in the Band 7 out of hours rota to provide support to the duty matron ensure senior nursing support across the organisation
  • Actively support change, service development and the implementation of new initiatives to promote patient centered care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Continuing responsibility for the assessment of care needs and setting standards by:

· Organising the ward team to provide individualised patient care by utilising skill mix appropriately within the available resources.

· Ensuring staff work within national and locally agreed policies and procedures.

· Compiling, implementation and evaluation of care, ensuring support for the patient and their family and all staff members.

· Leading and participating in clinical audit, using the results to improve and enhance nursing care

· Leading the implementation of policies as per Trust/National guidelines.

Maintain a safe working environment, ensuring high standards and safe practice is maintained by :

· Monitor and report adherence to standards of care in line with the Trust Nursing Assessment Performance framework.

· Teaching staff to understand their responsibilities e.g. environmental cleanliness, maintenance and use of all equipment within clinical setting.

· Monitoring incidents, accidents and complaints and participating in corrective action and the monitoring of outcomes.

· Adhering to the guidelines of the Health & Safety at Work Act.

· Utilisation of Trust Risk Assessment documentation, to ensure that Health & Safety / Clinical risk issues are identified / actioned in the ward area.

Management of the area, including the deployment and supervision of staff, to ensure that Trust, Divisional and Directorate Policies and Procedures are carried out correctly by :

· Planning off-duty rotas to make effective use of staff as per Trust Policy.

· Being responsible as the delegated budget holder for efficient and effective usage of the available resource.

· Recording and maintaining staff attendance records, managing and monitoring sickness and absenteeism in accordance with Trust Policy.

· Ensuring completion of appraisal personal development plans.

· Leading recruitment, selection and retention up to and including Band 6 level.

Establish and maintain effective communication channels within and outside the department by :

· Leading and establishing a teamwork philosophy, supporting the behavioural framework, empowering others to take part in the decision making process.

· Actively promote multi-disciplinary team working, ward rounds and discharge planning.

· Actively involved in facilitating Deputy Ward Manager Meetings, organising Ward Meetings and participating in divisional / directorate meetings as required.

· Playing an active role in the integration of Patient and Public Involvement. Responding to patient feedback (you said we did)

· Effecting change in order to meet changing patient need.

· Providing Senior Nurse Cover to support duty Matron and deputising for Matron as required.

· Ensuring ward team are communicated with through feedback Friday / ward meetings/ staff huddles and share to care.

To be responsible for the continuing assessment of performance and the identification of development needs of team members by :

· Ensuring that all new members of the team have a designated Mentor and participate in the induction and education of all new members of the team.

· Ensuring that all staff has an annual appraisal that includes a personal development plan relevant to their particular needs.

· Support staff in meeting revalidation requirements and, essential to role learning, ensure own personal development and learning.

Person specification KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE Essential criteria
  • Significant demonstrable experience at Band 6 level (or equivalent) in a relevant clinical area
  • Significant demonstrable post registration experience Within a surgical setting.
  • Previous demonstrable experience in a leadership capacity
QUALIFICATIONS Essential criteria
  • Proven NMC Registration – Adult Nursing.
  • Proven recognised teaching qualification.
  • Proven leadership course or the willingness to undertake.
Desirable criteria
  • Computer literate (ECDL
