Job overview

The Department of Plastic Surgery is seeking a full-time (10 PA) Consultant to join a dynamic, enthusiastic and forward thinking department. This is a new full-time post in plastic surgery focusing on hand surgery and trauma. The successful candidate will be expected to show leadership in his/her speciality and to offer support to clinical colleagues in other specialities across a full range of plastic surgical cases.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will work closely with the existing team in providing the full range of services including diagnosis, investigation and treatment of patients. The management of cases within the unit requiring hand and trauma surgery is currently undertaken by a highly skilled consultant and nursing team. The Plastic Surgery & Laser Centre receives referrals and requests for opinions from consultant specialists in other hospitals in the East of England including from the university teaching hospitals at Cambridge and Norwich.

Whilst a serious commitment to the work of the Plastic Surgery & Laser Centre is implicit in this appointment and relevant previous experience in hand surgery and microsurgery would be of high benefit with some aspects being essential.

The consultant will have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, ensuring safe handover as appropriate. He/she will provide a prompt opinion on request from consultant colleagues throughout the region.

They will have a focus to achieve key standards of both trauma and 18 week referrals and support the management of new to follow up ratios for the speciality in outpatient clinics

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide general hand plastic surgical services to Bedford Hospital patients. The post covers all fundamentals of plastic hand and trauma surgery. We would like the appointee to have experience in hand trauma surgery and they would be encouraged to work with our orthopaedic consultant surgeons across Bedfordshire Hospitals.

The post holder will be expected to show leadership in his/her specialty and to offer support to clinical colleagues in other specialities across a full range of plastic hand and trauma surgical cases. They will be expected to work within an MDT setting.

They will work closely with the current Plastic Consultants and have responsibility with them for the work and development of the hospital’s widely recognised Plastic and Laser Treatment Centre. They will also be expected to be part of the team to develop the hand surgery and academic aspects of the unit.

They will participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care achieving key standards and 18 weeks. 

The Trust, along with Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (as well as other health and social care partners) have embarked on a strategic change programme known as the Integrated Care System (ICS). As a result of this, the successful candidate may be required to adapt their job plan in the future to work across more than one site within the area; this may also include delivering aspects of care in community settings which supports the Trust’s vertical integration strategy.

The Trust is part of the Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Health and Care Partnership (Integrated Care System) and within this the Bedfordshire Care Alliance. As a result of this, the successful candidate may be required to adapt their job plan in the future to work across more than one site within the area; this may also include delivering aspects of care in community settings which supports the Trust’s vertical integration strategy.
