Job summary

There is an exciting opportunity for Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANP) to join the acute oncology/unscheduled care team to support provision of advanced nursing practice at Velindre Cancer Centre (VCC). You will join a supportive, forward thinking, and innovative multi-disciplinary team who are committed to improving the unscheduled care service for patients who develop complications because of their cancer/cancer treatments.

You must understand the needs of acutely unwell cancer patients; with knowledge of managing acute conditions, disease progression complications, and management of systemic anti-cancer treatment complications and possess advanced communication skills.

An MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP) and independent prescribing qualification is essential for this role. Applications from applicants partway through the MSc ACP pathway may be considered. It is desirable that applicants possess a valid Advanced Life Support certificate. Applicants will need to demonstrate how they meet the 4 pillars of ACP by producing a portfolio of evidence.

You will be dynamic with an ability to work autonomously, prioritise care and balance workload in a busy environment whilst supporting colleagues. A flexible approach and commitment to service development is essential for this post and you may be required to work in other areas and shift work determined by current and future demands and needs of the service.

Main duties of the job

To have a highly visible clinical presence.

To demonstrate high level clinical expertise as a Nurse Practitioner/ Advanced Nurse Practitioner and be a role model in the field of acute oncology nursing, with specific expertise in assessment of new admissions and acute care at ward level and throughout the cancer centre. To use advanced clinical skills in the assessment and management of patients, who are causing concern, or those that present to the Cancer centre To support the patient treatment helpline undertaking robust telephone triage using a recognising oncology triage tool and signposting patients to the correct place of care. Undertake holistic assessments, history taking, physical examination and psychosocial functioning of patients Review and interpret all information available utilising a systematic process of complex diagnostic reasoning to make a working and differential diagnosis. Develop and record a treatment plan consistent with the outcome of assessment and most probable diagnosis. Prescribe medications within the capacity of non-medical prescribing, adhering to Trust policy and defined scope of practice. Undertake radiological assessment of patients requiring abdominal paracentesis and perform abdominal Paracentesis procedures Participate in PICC placement and management of complications of IV access

Job responsibilities

To actively seek to contribute to the growing knowledge base of oncology and acute care nursing practice through publications and participation in conferences. To demonstrate an up to date knowledge of oncology/ acute care nursing practice and responsibility for ones own professional development. To maintain a portfolio to fulfil requirements of the four pillars of advanced practice in maintaining effective Advanced Practitioner registration which will be subject to peer annual review Maintain safe practice and development through regular peer review of evidence based practice with medical Consultant supervisor. Liaise and collaborate with multi-professional disciplines and outside agencies. To be aware of the policies, procedures and philosophies of the Trust, understanding health and safety requirements and ensure that all duties and responsibilities are carried out within these guidelines. Contribute to wider issues in the Trust, such as committee membership, clinical progression and policy development.

Person Specification

Qualifications and/or Knowledge

Essential

MSc in Advanced Practice/ Clinical Practice or a MSc degree with evidence of working at that level to include history taking and clinical examination of patients or equivalent experience Registered General Nurse -Currently registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council Teaching/ Mentorship qualification

Desirable

Independent Non-Medical Prescribing Qualification or willingness to undertake Advanced Life Support (ALS) Course or willingness to undertake Non medical authorisation of Blood products or willingness to undertake

Experience

Essential

Substantial experience of assessing and managing acute medical or acute oncology problems. Substantial experience of managing a variety of medical problems, for example: Oncology, Haematology, Critical Care & Acute Care, A&E/ MAU. Experience of leading teams working autonomously and service improvement Ability to work across professional boundaries

Desirable

Experience in undertaking audit and management of change in practice related to audit results IQT qualification

Aptitude and Abilities

Essential

Excellent communication skills: interpersonal, written and verbal. Confidence to adapt to an evolving and changing service. Ability to assess and manage patient risk effectively and safely. Good time management, organisational skills and ability to prioritise a busy/ unpredictable workload Well developed IT skills/ word processing/ data collection/ internet skills Committed to professional development. Understanding of evidence based practice. Working knowledge of clinical governance. Ability to use research findings in clinical practice. Knowledge of national standards and policy that inform best practice (for example: NICE/ Welsh Government/Department of Health guidelines). Appreciate the accountability associated with advanced clinical roles.
