Bowel Cancer Specialist Screening Practitioner

The NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme is a world first amongst screening programmes and the first to offer screening to both men and women. The Lancashire Programme commenced in April 2008 and due to continued development and expansion of the service we are looking to appoint full time Specialist Screening Practitioners who will play a key role in supporting patients through the screening process.

The post will be based at the Stadium Blackpool although frequent and extensive daily motorway travel throughout the Lancashire region will be required.

The post will involve evening and weekend shifts.

You need to be able to use a range of IT Systems including the National Bowel Cancer Screening IT system (BCSS) for which training will be provided and be familiar with Microsoft Office applications including Outlook & Word.

You will need to commit to attend the Liverpool John Moores University Specialist Bowel Cancer Screening Practitioner Course and be successful in completion of this Certificate of Professional Development.

Main duties of the job

This role will include the delivery of nurse-led and virtual clinics,within the community throughout Lancashire andattendance at screening colonoscopy lists across Lancashire at three different Trusts and accredited sites. You will act as the individuals' advocate, supporting and empowering them and their family to make informed choices and decisions about their screening examination, care, treatment and future participation, through all stages of the screening programme. You will be involved in assessing individuals, making decisions based on the outcomes of your assessment and managing your own caseload. You will participateat colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team meetings (MDT's) in the participating individuals' relevant Trust. You need to be able to work well within a team and also work autonomously as an individual.

Job responsibilities

To play a pivotal role in supporting the BCSP:

Working collaboratively with the Programme Hub. Delivery of nurse-led and virtual clinics within the community throughout Lancashire, assessing individuals, making decisions based on the outcomes of your assessment and managing your own caseload. To act as the individuals advocate, supporting and empowering them and their family to make informed choices and decisions about their screening examination, care, treatment and future participation, through all stages of the screening programme. Attendance at screening colonoscopy lists to ensure quality and safety. Participation at colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs) in theparticipating individuals relevant Trust. To be able to work well within a team and also work autonomously as an individual. To be involved in health promotion activities by all sections of the society.

Clinical

Provide advice, information and support for those making direct contact with the screening centre Be responsible for care delivery to patients identified by the screening programme and will meet the needs of patients arising as a result of; Having been called to participate in screening Having been identified as positive on screening Needing to be assessed as fit to undertake screening colonoscopy or alternative diagnostic investigations Needing to be able to make informed decisions prior undergoing screening, screening colonoscopy or alternative diagnostic interventions Having been identified as requiring further intervention, treatment, surveillance follow-up or discharge To use specialist knowledge and advanced communication skills with patients and carers when breaking bad news and providing psychological support on diagnosis, treatment and symptom management Ensure timely access to screening colonoscopy or alternative diagnostic intervention and seamless transition to agreed pathways in primary, secondary, tertiary or out-patient care settings, during all stages of the screening pathway. To establish effective links with local colorectal cancer multi-disciplinary teams in order to ensure that when cancer is detected, there is timely presentation and transfer of patients to the multi-disciplinary team . Populate and maintain the BCSP National database. Participate in ongoing data collection and quality assurance, service feedback and audit with particular responsibility for the follow-up of patients. Perform comprehensive assessment of patient needs, plan, implement and evaluate care according to BCSP. Collect, collate, evaluate and report information, maintaining accurate patient records Work collaboratively with other professionals and organisations to ensure patient needs are met, especially in relation to referrals to local MDT's.

Qualifications

Essential

1st Level Registered Adult Nurse with 2 years experience Evidence of continuing professional development in speciality Teaching & assessing qualification ENB998 or equivalent

Desirable

Evidence of study at degree level Certification in Advanced Communication Skills

Experience

Essential

Broad range of clinical experience with specific experience in managing own caseload/working within a speciality. Participated in service development and implementation of change. Knowledge of professional and NHS issues.

Desirable

Experience of providing nurse led clinics Specific knowledge relating to national policies and procedures relevant to NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme

Skills/Attributes

Ability to communicate in a variety of settings with patients of varying levels of understanding. Able to present written information in a logical manner.
