Job overview

We are looking for Student Nurse Associates to join our teams working across Derbyshire, based in our acute mental health wards and forensic inpatient areas. The role involves studying at university for Nursing Associate Apprenticeship and various placements in the Trust. At the end of the programme, you will work as a Registered Nursing Associate in the new Making Room for Dignity inpatient areas.

This Apprenticeship offers you the chance to earn a salary (fixed at bottom of band 3 during the apprenticeship programme), while you gain valuable work experience and new skills, while being supported to achieve the Registered Nursing Associate qualification. This is an opportunity to build your skills and confidence and open a wealth of possibilities for your future career.

Main duties of the job

This is a developmental role. The trainee will work towards progression into the post of Nursing Associate through successful completion of the Nursing Associate training programme which includes the attainment of a level 5 Foundation Degree equivalent qualification. They will develop and maintain knowledge, skills and competencies related to the role of Nursing Associate within the service and through completion of the Nursing Associate training programme which includes working in care settings and delivery of person-centred care.

This role involves weekly attendance and study at university to complete the academic components of the role.

Qualification Requirement:

English - GCSEs Grade A-C (9-4) or Functional Skills level 2 or Equivalent

Maths - GCSEs Grade A-C (9-4) or Functional Skills level 2 or Equivalent

NVQ level 3 or higher in health and social care or other relevant qualification

Please note original certificates must be provided prior to interview stage by shortlisted candidates.

All qualifications obtained outside of the UK must have a statement of comparability from UK ENIC.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

“Applicants should be aware they must be able to demonstrate they meet the eligibility criteria (Annex A - ) before being permitted to commencing an apprenticeship. Evidence of qualifications will be requested as part of a pre-screening process prior to interview, must have been resident in the UK for a minimum of 3 years by the start date of the apprenticeship and have the relevant right to work in the UK for the duration of the programme“ 

This role includes study at university and requires various assignments, tests, exams, practice learning placements to meet the approved NMC program. It is essential that all elements are achieved . For the majority of the time you will be based in an acute mental health setting. 

About the Making Room for Dignity programme

More than £m has been invested in for the development of new mental health inpatient facilities in Derby and Chesterfield, to provide single en-suite bedrooms. The programme includes two -bed acute mental health units; the Derwent Unit in Chesterfield and Carsington Unit in Derby. A new male Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is also being built at Kingsway Hospital, alongside enhanced care services for female patients at Audrey House. The first of these exciting developments will open in autumn 4.

The training programme

The Nursing Associate Apprentice level 5 training programme combines both academic study and placements as set out by Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements. As an Apprentice Trainee Nursing Associate (mental health), you will be employed by Derbyshire Healthcare Foundation Trust and work in a wide range of clinical placement settings. On completion of the programme, you will be awarded Registered Nursing Associate qualification and then move into permanent Registered Nursing Associate roles.

General Duties

• This is a developmental role. The trainee will work towards progression into the post of Nursing Associate to deliver high quality and compassionate care. This will include carrying out delegated clinical and care tasks and responsibilities under the direction and supervision of experienced healthcare professionals. 

• Work as part of designated clinical and care teams delivering care that focuses on the direct needs of the individual and promoting independence

• Participate fully in the university apprenticeship programme. Attend Trust training and development. Working with assessor, supervisor in the workplace and on placements. Working to achieve standards of competence as set out by the NMC and reflective practice skills.
