The University of Cambridge is recruiting for a one-year sandwich placement in an IT support role at the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit, a world-renowned centre for mitochondrial research (further information about the Unit can be found at ). Its personnel include over one hundred scientists (staff, visitors, and post-graduate students) and ten administrative/support staff.

The Unit's three-strong IT Team provides general and specialist IT services supporting the research programmes of the Unit, as well as coordinating the MBU's access to the University's central IT and communications services.

The successful candidate will work closely with the existing team, providing face-to-face support to the members of the Unit, as well as managing and maintaining some key parts of the Unit's IT infrastructure. The role-holder will report to the Unit's IT Technician, but the whole team works collaboratively to provide the best possible service to the Unit.

The role provides first and second line IT support for the department, including problem solving of complex technical issues. In addition, the role-holder also performs various infrastructure tasks (e.g., running server backups) and undertakes short projects (e.g., desktop computer refreshes). Depending on the role-holder's skill set, they may also take responsibility for managing some of the IT Department's technical services.

The Unit's infrastructure includes some 250 desktop and laptop computers, 40 physical and virtual servers, and a 1,000-core High Performance Computing (HPC) facility with over one Petabyte (PB) of storage on a FibreChannel Storage Area Network (SAN). Desktop computers in the Unit are Apple iMacs, while computers controlling scientific equipment mostly run Windows. CentOS/RedHat Linux is the mainstay of the Unit's server estate, with a handful of Windows Server installations providing an Active Directory Domain and other specialised services. The Unit's network infrastructure is Cisco Catalyst.
