Job summary

Unique opportunity to build on the established Patient & Public Involvement & Engagement (PPIE) work of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), and head up the communications agenda for the new Cambridge based international HealthTech Research Centre in Brain and Spine Injury.

Main duties of the job

You will lead communication and dissemination across the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre for Brain Injury, cultivating and managing external relationships with key stakeholders including commissioners and PPIE networks. TYou will be responsible for horizon scanning, carrying out unmet need assessments, support of the Technology Assessment Programme and industry liaison, and spearhead a network of brain injury public contributors.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Educated to degree level or equivalent . Qualification/training in patient and public involvement, participatory research, public engagement with science, or health communication. Evidence of ongoing professional development in relevant areas.

Desirable

Leadership or management qualification or equivalent experience in managing teams.

Experience

Essential

Experience leading public involvement and engagement practices and activities . Experience of communications and public relations practices including social media, campaign planning, media activity, reputation and stakeholder management. Substantial experience of media relations - both proactive and reactive. Experience of devising, implementing and evaluating effective communications and engagement plans and the ability to identify the right channel for a particular audience .

Desirable

Experience of working across large and diverse teams and organisations . Experience of stakeholder mapping and analysis. Experience working in an NHS, research or health related public involvement environment. Experience of working with underserved and historically excluded groups and communities.

Knowledge

Essential

Sound political judgement and astuteness in understanding and working with complex policy and diverse interest groups. Understanding of the external political environment, particularly as it affects the NIHR, NHS and wider health and social care system.

Desirable

Understanding of health data research and data science. Awareness of national policies and trends surrounding research and health data. Knowledge of NIHR and HDRUK standards for public involvement. Technical knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Adobe InDesign or equivalent software packages.

Skills

Essential

Outstanding written and oral communication skills as well as demonstrable numerical, verbal and critical reasoning skills. Strong stakeholder management skills. Strong negotiation and influencing skills with ability to motivate and engage individuals and teams . Ability to make decisions autonomously when required on difficult issues.

Additional Requirements

Essential

Demonstrated interest in health research. Ability to occasionally work out of hours, to support events and public workshops. Ability to travel, particularly to partner organisation and target populations. The ability to understand and behave at all times, towards patients, visitors and colleagues according to the Trust values of safe, kind, excellent.

Desirable

Demonstrated use of health data to improve health outcomes.
